How The Great British Bake-Off Shows You Can Compete While Also Encouraging Others

Many of the shows that are popular on television right now are the reality competition shows, such as Survivor and Big Brother, and talent shows like America’s Got Talent, Britain’s Got Talent, The Voice, etc. Cooking shows are also quite popular with the viewers, and when you combine them with competition, they become even more popular. Iron Chef was one of the first such popular shows. Another is The Great British Bake-Off.

In case you aren’t familiar with the show, The Great British Bake-Off  (or as it is known in the US, The Great British Baking Show) is a show where 12 amateur bakers face off against each other over a series of 10 weekends to create a variety of items ranging from things like steamed buns to cakes and gingerbread houses. It is all done to win the coveted title and become the top amateur baker.

While the show is a competition, and some of challenges can be difficult and stressing to accomplish, there is more to the show than just everyone trying to win. And that difference is what makes the show stand out.

You see, the Contestants do more than just compete and the judges do more than just act as judges on this show. They realize this show is more than an competition, that they’re all in it for fun. Knowing that, they try to help and encourage each other while they also compete.

When you watch the show, you see none of the twists, backbiting or people taking enjoyment in another’s misfortune as you might see used in other reality shows to create tension. Instead, the contestants know ahead of time what a couple of the challenges will be so they can practice at home, and there is no created scarcity of ingredients to make contestants fight over them. The show assumes that just the pressure of doing your best will create enough tension. Instead, camaraderie is encouraged, and you see the contestants helping each other, giving each other tips, and encouraging each other. The judges are encouraging to the contestants as well. Their critiques can brutal at times, but they are often constructive and they almost always manage to find something about a contestant to praise.

It is this difference, the show’s genuineness and lack of  drama and tension, that has helped make it so popular. Surprisingly, there is enough tension in just waiting and watching to see if something being baked turns out right. But the real draw seems to be in how nice the show is, in how honest and helpful everyone is, including the judges.

The creators of The Great British Bake-Off made it a point to get “real” people, people who want to bake and not just people who want to be on TV. That has made quite the difference in the show and set it apart from other so-called “reality” shows. In casting “real” people, the show lets viewers see real people competing, and so they are able to see how people can be really, truly helpful and encouraging to each other, even while competing.
