When Drones, Virtual Reality, and the Metaverse Combine

It was only a matter of time before someone thought about what Drones could do for virtual reality (VR) and the Metaverse. Now, the amalgamation of these technologies is well underway and it’s by no means just a trend that will phase away. Consider this – the Drone Racing League and Playground Labs, a play-to-earn (P2E) gaming affiliate backed by crypto investment fund Hivemind Capital Partners, are set to launch the former’s racing into the metaverse.

The use of drones in VR and the metaverse is varied. For instance, several metaverse views already require objects in virtual settings to look like their real-world counterparts. Besides, one might enter the metaverse and use a virtual drone to control a drone in the physical world.

3D Modeling is Building the Metaverse

It comes as no surprise that big players from across industries are looking at cashing in on what the metaverse has to offer by letting people acquire digital parallels of real-world items or having immersive real-world experiences.

One aspect that’s already separating the wheat from the chaff is the ability to create and launch 3D models at scale. While doing this with a pair of shoes or an automobile might not be particularly challenging, consider mapping and creating an accurate 3D model of something the size of a mountain.  Then, imagine how simple the task might become if you put drones that you can rent to the task.

Microsoft’s Project AirSim Explores Drone Metaverse

Project AirSim customers will get to use this solution for guiding and directing autonomous drones across different types of physical landscapes. This open-source project originally founded by Microsoft Research aims to develop, train, and test autonomous aerial vehicles. It relies on Microsoft Azure for simulating high-fidelity flights with the aim of testing and predicting real-world scenarios across varied flight paths.

Real-World Metaverse Applications

The concept of using drones for virtual tourism is not new. Now, there is potential for the link between the real world and the metaverse to become much stronger. Take for example tourism which involves traveling between places. This can be expensive, time-consuming, and even cumbersome. Tourism in the metaverse, on the other hand, will require little effort, and people can get from one place to another in the blink of an eye.

Delivering great experiences will require replicating real locations as 3D models in the best possible manner. Getting drones to fly around target locations and then using their feeds to create accurate models is bound to help create a more realistic metaverse.

Where Do VR Drones Stand?

From live streaming a waterfall to letting you take flight across the Eiffel Tower; VR drones have the capability of delivering content in an almost life-like setting.  A VR drone captures content from different angles while in flight, and people get to view the same using VR headsets. Depending on the quality of the camera a VR drone uses, the content it provides can be highly immersive. 360-degree views make for even better viewing experiences.

Conclusion

Given that the metaverse aims to bring real-world experiences into our homes, it’s important for those looking at commercial gains to get the basics right. If you or your business aims to give customers a great metaverse experience, creating accurate 3D models is crucial. Fortunately, drones can simplify the mapping process significantly. Besides, drones are bound to find other uses in the metaverse as well.  For instance, you could use an underwater drone in the metaverse to control its real-world twin when carrying out undersea expeditions.
