Printing Lingo 101: Your Introduction to Sombrero Hat Holes

If you have ever ordered promo products from a printing company, you have probably noticed that the entire industry has its own slang. Words such as branding, art paper, bespoke printing, and colour separation are only a few examples that you might hear at any given time.

Out of them all, the phrase that draws the most attention of those unfamiliar with printing lingo is a sombrero hat hole. What does this phrase really mean? And which part of the customisation process is it tied to? Read on to find out!

Sombrero Hat Hole: A Definition

In printing circles, a Sombrero Hat hole refers to a special type of hole punched through a particular product. Brands then use this hole to hang said product from a display hook in a store.

Though this name might sound strange, it makes a lot of sense. Namely, the hole actually resembles a sombrero hat, so its name is quite apt. Besides this name, these holes are also sometimes called ‘Inverted Ts’. Again, the name comes from the hole’s appearance.

Sombrero hat holes are popular because they are compatible with any style of display hooks. These include both Euro-style loop hooks and single-prong display hooks.

Companies can make these holes in pretty much any material. Although most products require only a single one, printing brands can also punch in multiple holes if that’s necessary and the client asks for it.

Printed Products That Require a Sombrero Hat Hole

These holes usually go hand in hand with header cards or headers. Made from thin cardstock, headers are folded at the top and stapled to a polybag. This type of bag is transparent, so people can easily see the products inside as they browse through the aisles. Headers often house products such as toys, different household items, stationery, and so on.

Besides headers, companies often use sombrero hat holes with backer cards. They are stiffer and sturdier than headers, and manufacturers affix items directly to them. These items include some smaller tools, gadgets, and even some cosmetics.
