Using Downtime to Grow Your Business

For many small businesses, the impact of COVID-19 has changed the pace of our work. We longingly remember the days prior to March 2020 when we were so busy with daily tasks that our ‘someday’ tasks never got done. These are the projects that are important but can’t seem to keep your attention when Business is running at a fast pace. Maybe you had a new website on your bucket list, or you dreamed of starting a blog, updating old marketing collateral or becoming more active on your company’s social media pages. Whatever was on your wish list, now is the time to get those projects done!

Take a few moments and compile your notes on projects, dreams and goals that were put in your virtual ‘parking lot’ over the past 6-12 months. Reevaluate each of them based on your company’s future business objectives. Do they still align? Will they help to grow your business? If so, prioritize them starting with the smallest nugget – the lowest Hanging Fruit. What item would take little time and effort to execute, but will make a big impact in your day to day operation? Maybe your website has dated information that needs updated, or perhaps your logo is looking dated and needs a refresh. Find a trusted marketing partner with transparent fees and responsive service and start checking things off your list.

Once you handle the low hanging fruit, it’s time to dream big. Take a look at the big items on your wish list and take the first step to get started. The idea of creating a new video series to highlight your products and services or building a brand-new website can seem daunting. Don’t let the scope of the task keep you from starting it. Discuss the vision and budget for this big project with your internal team to be sure everyone is aligned. Then contact a few marketing agencies to get recommendations and estimates. Once you start the conversation, you can lean on your agency to keep the project moving forward.

At some point in the next few months to a year, we’ll all look back at this period of time where our lives were changed by the coronavirus. For a business, these months may be marked with drops in revenue and financial stress. But when we come out on the other side, won’t it be nice to see what we were able to accomplish during this slower time? Make the time investment now, and you’ll benefit from the growth in your business for many years down the line.
