How to Become a Persuasive Writer

Young writers are always looking for the best way to build a career. Fortunately, we no longer live in an age when writers must work for a magazine or newspaper publication.

There are so many opportunities available for freelance writers who want to work from anywhere. The internet has opened many new opportunities across almost every industry. All you need to do is grab ahold of them and put in the work.

Of course, you need to bring some Writing skills to the table before you can establish a writing career. The No. 1 aspect of any good writing piece is persuasiveness. A writer who knows how to persuade the reader will enjoy a lucrative career.

Whether you’re working as a sales copywriter or website content creator, persuasive writing is a valuable skill. It lets you convince the reader that something is true or realistic. This is what employers in the industry want to see from their writers.

Interested in trying your hand at professional writing? Check out the following 10 writing tips for writing persuasive and engaging copy.

If you can learn these tips and implement them into your writing pieces, then you shouldn’t have a problem getting hired for more writing jobs in the future.

1. Use Active Voice

An Active Voice is a more engaging voice. Active voice occurs when the subject of a sentence performs the action with a verb. It is opposed to passive voice, in which the verb acts upon the subject.

For example:

  • Active voice: The farmer ploughed the field.
  • Passive voice: The field was ploughed by the farmer.

2. Focus on the Audience

You need to have an idea of who your target Readers are. When you write, you need to write for this specific audience. This is the best way to get your message across to those who are the most interested in reading it.

3. Describe the Objective

Make your objective clear at the beginning of your writing. The reader must understand the overall message that you’re trying to convey within the first paragraph. If you fail to do this, the reader will get confused and likely give up on reading any further.

4. Confront Objections

Some readers are bound to disagree with what you’re writing. Rather than waiting to receive their objections, try addressing them immediately in your writing. Give them a good reason to believe in what you’re writing and explain why their objections are not valid.

5. Make It an Easy Read

No one expects you to be Shakespeare or a Harvard-educated writer. In fact, most readers prefer to read simple writing that doesn’t contain a lot of big words and fancy phrases. Keep your writing simple and to the point.

6. Establish Authority

Why should readers believe your writing? You need to establish yourself as an authority on the topic or niche that you’re discussing. Show proof of your knowledge in this area to convince them that you’re worth believing.

7. Include Facts and Statistics

Readers want to see proof if they’re going to believe you. Present them with facts and statistics that are cited and sourced.

8. Make a Catchy Headline

A catchy headline is how you get a reader interested in your content in the first place. It needs to capture their attention in a way that makes them want to find out more information about something.

9. Touch the Reader’s Emotions

Write in a way that reaches readers on an emotional level. There is no better way to persuade a reader to do something than to touch their emotions.

You can tell a story that is heartbreaking, funny, enlightening, happy or any other emotion that you want to convey.

10. Include a Call to Action

Be sure your writing tells readers what you want them to do. Suggest to them what action to take based on what they’ve read.

Give your readers a chance to engage with your writing by letting them leave their own comments and feedback on it. This will build a community of interested readers who can learn from one another and grow together.
