How to Keep A WordPress Site Safe

It’s been a full year since we published our last blog post. Like the old saying, “The cobbler’s children go unshod.” A marketing firm doesn’t have the time to market itself Part of the “slack” is because my daughter was born last year and I took some time off to enjoy a different kind of “work!”

I have to make this post simply because our world is not getting any safer and our world wide web is not either. I have seen websites getting spammed and hacked more and more frequently and therefore I’d like to point out to my clients and friends that securing your website is absolutely critical.

Now most of our websites are built on self-hosted Wordpress. If yours is with a hosted service like SquareSpace or Shopify, you don’t need to worry too much as security is their job.

So what if you have a self-hosted WordPress website?

Installing a security or anti-spam Plugin is very important. Of course, updating themes and plugins in time is without a doubt necessary. With a security plugin, like WordFence, you get a reminding alert whenever any plugin needs an update or if you were to buy its Paid Version, you’d get more security features such as mobile sign in, etc.

I’d like to share its latest survey result on how websites get hacked:

From here, please read the full article and understand what you need to do to secure your website:

How Attackers Gain Access to WordPress Sites

I would also recommend you use an anti-spam plugin such as Akismet or Clean Talk. So spam comments can always get blocked.

Finally, if you have already been hacked and want to remove the malicious code, you can inquire your hosting company about any malware cleanup / web scanning services they may provide. A 3rd party scanner like Sucuri (I’m talking about its paid version) can also be a good option.

Feel free to contact us for any questions or let us help manage your website for security and marketing purposes.
