The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Hosts Workshop on Leveraging Business Events for Societal Change

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre recently hosted a one-day workshop focused on leveraging the business event industry to create positive societal change. Led by social impact advocate Geneviève Leclerc, the workshop brought together participants from various sectors, including national associations, organizations in the business events supply chain, professional congress organizers, exhibition planners, and hospitality representatives.

Attendees highlighted the importance of finding meaningful purposes for gatherings, moving beyond simple knowledge exchange at conferences. They emphasized the need for experiences that engage with destinations holistically, aligning with long-term impact goals. These initiatives seek to address local community needs, leaving behind legacies that change mindsets, behaviors, influence policy reforms, and ultimately improve the lives of the community.

John Burke, General Manager of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, said,
“Organising this workshop is part of our continuous commitment towards industry
development. Meetings and conferences are powerful change drivers that act as catalysts
that leave lasting impact to society. By initiating these important conversations on how
associations, organisers and the venue can create impactful events, the business events
industry become part of the solution that drives positive change to people’s lives and
livelihood.”

Geneviève Leclerc, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of #Meet4Impact, shared,
“Business events delegates want to break from the silos and do more for the communities
where they are convening in. Recognising this, many associations have aligned their
conference missions and their raison d’être with the priorities at the destination which
addresses the local community’s issues and needs. Strategically incorporating these
elements ensures that the event leaves a lasting legacy which creates meaningful economic
and societal impact.”

The workshop provided an interactive platform for exchanging knowledge, combining classroom sessions with engaging hands-on activities. These activities included sharing case studies and collaboratively developing impact frameworks tailored for upcoming events.
