London to Host World Design Congress at Barbican Centre in September 2025

London will host the World Design Congress at the Barbican Centre in September 2025, marking its first occurrence in the city since 1969. Over 1,000 professionals from the global design sphere, alongside leaders from business, academia, and research, will convene for the 34th edition of this event to explore significant design topics with international relevance.

Organized by the UK’s Design Council, the congress will coincide with the London Design Festival, highlighting the UK’s central role in the global design dialogue. The choice of the Barbican Centre, known for its distinctive brutalist architecture, underscores the venue’s global architectural significance. The Design Council is involved in the Barbican Renewal Programme, which aims to enhance the Barbican’s public and creative spaces sustainably.

The congress will focus on the “Design for Planet” theme, addressing climate change’s impacts and the role of design in mitigating carbon emissions and enhancing biodiversity.

Established in 1944 to boost the post-war economy, the Design Council now supports nearly two million professionals in the UK’s design sector. The event holds historical significance for London, having hosted its sixth edition in 1969 with attendees from 39 countries and distinguished guests like H.R.H. Princess Margaret.
