Setting Strategic Search Engine Optimization Goals for 2012

 .
We are now a week into 2012 - have you set your Search Engine optimization goals yet? Goals are important for helping us to achieve and get what we want out of our online business so today I want to discuss the topic of Search Engine Optimization goals do's and don'ts.
Search Engine Optimization Goals - Focus on Actions Rather than Rank
Instead of saying 'I want to be first on Google next month' (sure, don't we all) focus on things that you can actually DO. The problem with focussing on rank is that you actually don't control that no matter what anyone may want to tell you. There are probably hundreds of thousands of other websites out there competing for those search terms, doing the same things you are doing, and so you simply don't know whether you will reach first place. Instead focus on things you do have control over - those actions that you know help to improve your SEO results. When you focus on the actions, good search placement should follow naturally. In fact the first time I received a first place rank on Google for a search term I hardly knew what I was doing at all and certainly had no idea that would happen! It was a very pleasant surprise and what initially got me interested in search engine optimization. I was simply doing what I felt would be beneficial for my business.
Break It Down
There are a number of factors which determine search engine optimization success, try to break these down and then set goals for the different areas e.g. blogging, social media, article marketing, link building, on-page optimization, etc. Make your goals specific and realistic e.g. I want to write five articles per week.
Know Where You're At
It is also important to always know where you're at. Track your results so that you know what is working and what is not. Although you don't want to focus on rank, you do want to know where you rank so that you can see if the actions you are taking are actually working or not. If they are not then you need to set some new goals for specific actions you can take and see if those work. Watch how what you do affects your placements in the search engines.
Setting specific search engine optimization goals is important for your success online but these goals should be focussed on actions that you have control over as opposed to rank which you do not. Use rank as a means of seeing whether the actions you are taking are actually working or not.
