The Importance of Making Time for Yourself

If you are anything like me, then you like to be busy. You like to constantly be doing one thing after another and involving yourself in as many and different things as possible. Even though you may complain to other people saying, “Ah, I have so much to do today,” you’re secretly satisfied and instead just want everyone to know about it. Although this may be your daily routine, it is extremely easy to lose track of time specifically for yourself.

For me, involvement has always been a priority and on campus, I consider myself very involved. I am a Resident Success Assistant for a group of wonderful sophomore residents, the Vice President and a Repertory Theatre Company Member for the Sacred Heart University Theatre Arts Program,Welch College of Business Mentor, and a member of Build On. Not only that but I work as a Marketing Intern here at WORX once a week, a House Manager for the Edgerton Center for Performing Arts Office and a photographer for anything and everything that goes on on campus. Did I also mention I am thinking about joining a sorority? Surprise mom and dad! Like I said, busy is just my thing.

Even though it looks like I have the tendency to spread myself out thin in terms of scheduling, my biggest fault is that I love to say “yes” to everyone and always prioritize others needs over my own and it becomes extremely easy to lose track of time for myself. I can just hear both of my parents reading this and saying, “How long have we been saying this?” but it’s true. It has been the topic of Conversation with my parents for years and I truly believe that the older I get, the more and more I realize how important having these conversations have actually been. Through these conversations, my parents have taught me that making time for yourself is okay. It does not make you look weak. Instead, it is honestly what keeps you going, it’s necessary.

Time for yourself looks different for different people. For some, it is catching up on a new episode of something on Netflix, baking a new dessert recipe that was found on Pinterest, or following along with an intense makeup tutorial even though you don’t have an event to wear out your final look. My mom says that I do that one too often and, “I go to the grocery store looking like I am going to prom.” The time that I do actually take for myself, though, varies. I love to craft, take trips to the beach, go on long car rides and belt out musical theatre songs with my best friends, and even though I dread it sometimes, go to the gym. These are the moments where I am most happy.

When thinking about your upcoming week, focus on the free time that you do have to add something special for yourself. It could be as simple as going for a walk around the block just to clear your head. Remind yourself that you have worked hard and deserve to take time to appreciate everything that you are doing. It’s all about you!
