How to Start an Affiliate Website: The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide

Affiliate marketing has become a popular way for entrepreneurs to generate passive income online. By promoting products or services through an Affiliate website, you can earn commissions for every sale made through your unique affiliate link. If you’ve seen our list of benefits of affiliate marketing and now you’re interested in starting your own affiliate website, this guide will provide a step-by-step overview of how to get started.

Step 1: Choose your niche

Before you can start building your affiliate website, you need to choose a Niche. This is the specific topic or industry that you’ll focus on promoting products or services for. Basically, to choose your niche, consider your interests, skills, and expertise. Ideally, you’ll want to choose a niche that you’re passionate about and knowledgeable in…and one that has lucrative and well-performing affiliate programs for you to promote.

What is a niche?

A niche is a specific market segment with unique needs or characteristics. For example, “fitness” is a broad market segment, but “yoga for pregnant women” is a niche within the fitness market. Choosing a niche helps you to focus your marketing efforts and connect with a specific audience. As a new site, you’re significantly more likely to have success if you are hyper-focused on a niche.

In order to be successful in affiliate marketing, you need to choose the right niche. Here’s how to choose the best niche for affiliate marketing.

Why is choosing the right niche important?

Choosing the right niche is important for several reasons. First, it helps you limit the amount of competition you have. If you choose a broad market segment, you will be competing with many other affiliates who are promoting similar products and going after the same kind of audience that you are. However, if you choose a niche, you can differentiate yourself and become an expert in that specific area.

Second, choosing the right niche helps you to build trust with your audience. When you focus on a specific niche, you can provide more targeted and personalized content that meets the needs of your readers. This builds trust and loyalty and makes it more likely that your audience will purchase products you recommend.

Choosing the right niche can be more profitable. When you focus on a specific niche, you can identify high-quality products that meet the needs of your audience. These products may have higher commissions or conversion rates, which can increase your earnings.

Now that we understand the importance of choosing the right niche, let’s discuss how to choose the best niche for affiliate marketing.

Identify your passions and interests

One of the first steps in choosing a niche is to identify your passions and interests. You will be more motivated and engaged if you are promoting products that you are genuinely interested in. Think about your hobbies, interests, and areas of expertise. Do you enjoy cooking, traveling, or fitness? Do you have a background in finance, law, or technology? These are all potential niches that you could explore.

Research market demand

Once you have identified a few potential niches, you need to research market demand. Is there a demand for products in this niche? Are people actively searching for information or solutions related to this niche? You can use tools like Google Trends, Amazon Best Sellers, or SEMrush to analyze search volume and competition in your chosen niche.

Assess competition

Another important factor to consider when choosing a niche is competition. Are there already many affiliates promoting products in this niche? Are there established players or brands that dominate the market? You want to choose a niche where you can stand out and provide unique value to your audience.

Consider profitability

Profitability is also an important factor to consider when choosing a niche. You want to choose a niche where you can earn a reasonable commission on each sale. You can research commission rates and average order value in your chosen niche to assess profitability.

Evaluate affiliate programs

Finally, you need to evaluate affiliate programs to ensure they align with your chosen niche. Look for programs that offer products that are relevant and valuable to your audience. You should also consider the commission rate, payment frequency, and support provided by the affiliate program.

To look at potential affiliates at this stage, just do some Googling for some of the top brands in your niche + affiliate program. Don’t worry about signing up just yet (we’re not there yet!). You might want to save yourself sometime later by saving the sign-up links for any affiliate programs you come across (I typically throw them in a spreadsheet for safekeeping).

Step 2: Choose a domain name and hosting

Once you’ve chosen your niche, you’ll need to choose a domain name and hosting for your website. Your domain name should be relevant to your niche and easy to remember. There are many hosting providers to choose from, but it’s recommended to choose a reliable provider with good customer support that comes highly recommended.

One of the most important factors that determine the success of an affiliate marketing website is the domain name. The domain name is the unique address that identifies your website on the internet. It plays a significant role in your online branding, search engine optimization (SEO), and overall user experience. Here’s how to choose a domain name for an affiliate marketing website:

Make it memorable

Your domain name is the foundation of your online presence, and it should be memorable and brandable. Choose a name that is easy to remember, spell, and pronounce. Avoid using hyphens, numbers, and special characters as they make it difficult to remember and type. Your domain name should also reflect your brand identity and niche.

Choose a .com extension

Trust us; there’s a reason that .com domains are the quickest to sell. The .com extension is the most popular and widely recognized domain extension on the internet. It’s also the most trusted and credible extension, which makes it the best choice for affiliate marketing websites. However, if your target audience is local, you may consider using a country-specific extension like .uk, .ca, or .au.

Keep it short and concise

Short domain names are easy to remember and type, and they also look more professional. Don’t believe me? Read it from Google’s own Google Domain FAQs. A domain name should be no longer than 15 characters. However, if you can find a shorter domain name that reflects your brand identity and niche, go for it.

Admittedly, keeping it short, relevant, and easy to remember might be harder in some niches than others. But Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither should your website be. Take time to think about it for a couple of days, at least; you never know what genius URL might pop into your head.

Use keywords

Keywords are the phrases or words that people use when searching for information on the internet. Including keywords in your domain name can help improve your website’s SEO and search engine rankings. However, don’t stuff too many keywords into your domain name as it can look spammy and actually harm your SEO.

If you look at virtually any Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) in a specific niche – for example, kayaking – you’ll notice that more often than not, sites that are specifically covering that niche extensively dominate the top 10 results (as opposed to more general use/news/entertainment type sites).

For example, look at what the SERPs look like when I simply search for ‘best small kayaks’:

Notice in the screenshot above that all of the URLs in the SERPs are niche-specific sites; you aren’t seeing NY Times or USA Today or CNN, even though those sites have significantly higher domain authority than the niche sites showing up in the top results.

It goes to show that going ultra-niche is the way to go when choosing your domain name.

Avoid trademark infringement

Before choosing a domain name, make sure it doesn’t infringe on someone else’s trademark. Trademark infringement can lead to legal issues, which can be costly and time-consuming. You can use tools like Trademarkia or the USPTO to search for registered trademarks and avoid infringement.

Check for social media availability

Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok are an essential part of online branding and marketing, especially when it comes to affiliate content websites. Before choosing a domain name, check if the corresponding social media handles are available. This will help you maintain a consistent online presence and avoid confusion.

Use domain name generators

If you’re still struggling to come up with a domain name, you can use domain name generators like Namecheap or Domain Wheel. These tools can help you generate creative and unique domain names based on your niche and brand identity.

Sign-up For A Hosting Plan

After testing many, many different servers over the past 10 years, I can honestly say my go-to is Big Scoots when it comes to the best bang for your buck hosting. I use Big Scoots for Nerd Much after first testing cheaper and more expensive servers from other hosts. I tried iPage, Digital Ocean, BlueHost, and more before finally landing at Big Scoots and getting hooked up!

Trust me when I tell you that you won’t find a better bang for your buck (as I also mentioned in my How to Start a Gaming Website post over at Nerd Much).

Step 3: Install WordPress

WordPress is a popular website-building platform that’s easy to use and customize, and it is a lot more customizable in the backend than Wix or Squarespace.

Most hosting providers offer a one-click WordPress installation, making it easy to get started (you’d find this in your site’s cPanel). Once you’ve installed WordPress, you can start customizing your website’s design and layout.

For manual WordPress installation for your affiliate site, you can read more about the installation process at WordPress.org.

Step 4: Choose affiliate programs

To start earning commissions through your affiliate website, you’ll need to choose affiliate programs and platforms to promote. There are many affiliate programs to choose from, such as Amazon Associates, Commission Junction, and ShareASale. Choose a program that’s relevant to your niche and offers high-quality products or services.

Amazon Associates is the easiest to use and, obviously, carries millions of products. So, for beginner affiliate marketers, you should sign-up there.

Your next step should be to find which affiliate platform has the most available affiliate programs for your niche. Here are some of my personal favorites that are worth checking out:

  • Impact Radius
  • Shareasale
  • Commission Junction
  • Clickbank
  • Avantlink
  • Flexoffers

After signing up for these affiliate platforms, you should begin sifting through the many different available affiliate programs that each of them has and signing up for the ones relevant to your niche (and are worth promoting).

It’s worth noting that this process of signing up for all of these affiliate platforms does not immediately grant you access to all of the available affiliate programs. It will take a couple of days for you to get approved for the platform, and it will take another two-three days for the individual affiliate brands to accept you into their program.

Step 5: Create Affiliate-Friendly Content

Now it’s time to start creating content for your affiliate website. This can include product reviews, comparisons, and how-to guides. Your content should be helpful and informative, first and foremost, and should be focused on the user. But also, you can include links for the products or services you’re affiliated with.

We will delve much deeper into affiliate content creation another time, but basically, you want to create content that allows you to naturally link to affiliate programs. The entire idea of affiliate marketing is to drive clicks to the various affiliate programs; the sales will come on their own, eventually.

Step 6: Promote Your Affiliate Website

Once you’ve created content for your website, Step 6 in our guide to creating your own affiliate site is to Promote your affiliate site. That’s right – it’s time to start promoting it. This can include social media marketing, email marketing, and search engine optimization (SEO). You can also consider paid advertising, such as Google AdWords or Facebook ads, to drive traffic to your website, but when you’re just starting out, I highly recommend focusing on content creation and SEO.

Step 7: Track Your Results

To maximize your earnings from affiliate marketing, it’s important to track your results. This includes monitoring your website’s traffic, conversion rates, and earnings. You can use tools like Google Analytics and affiliate tracking software to track your results and optimize your website’s performance.

Starting an affiliate website can be a lucrative way to earn passive income online. By following these seven steps, you can start building your own affiliate website and generating revenue through affiliate marketing. Remember to choose a niche you’re passionate about, create helpful content, and track your results to maximize your success.
