5 Ways to Provide PTSD Support to a Loved One

PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, is a condition that occurs after experiencing a distressing or dangerous event. Most treatment programs will entail a combination of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy but PTSD support is not one-size-fits-all, with many people benefiting from multiple types of support such as having a good social support network, a safe environment, and access to medical and mental health services. Below are 5 ways you can support a loved one who is struggling with PTSD and mental illness.

It may take your loved one a long time to open up about their trauma, to process it, or to heal. Offer patient listening, love, and support, without guilt or strings attached. Encourage therapy with a trained professional so they can safely unpack their experience and find relief. And don’t hesitate to remind them that you love them, they are not a burden, and that they will heal!
