Nicola Sturgeon set to resign as Scotland's first minister, senior source tells Sky News

At a press conference in Edinburgh later this morning, the Shocking Announcement is anticipated to be made.

Sky News has been informed by a senior source within the Scottish government that Scotland's first Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, is preparing to step down.

Nicola sturgeon resigns as scotland's first minister

The shocking announcement is expected to be made by the leader of the SNP at a press conference at 11 a.m. in Edinburgh at Bute House, her official residence.

Political editor Beth Rigby of Sky News is aware that she will remain in her position until someone else takes over, but there is "not an obvious candidate," which raises "huge questions" regarding the party's future.

SNP sources have informed Beth Rigby that the first minister has "had enough," although the reasons for her departure have not yet been made public.

Since taking over from Alex Salmond, she has been in charge of both the party and the country.

Since then, she has won elections at every poll, and she has continued to campaign for a second referendum on Scottish independence.

The first minister, on the other hand, is now at odds with the Conservative-led UK government, which supports the union.

Her decision, according to a senior Labour source, demonstrated that the independence campaign was "over" and that "the SNP have run out of road" after 15 years of failure.

In recent months, she has faced a number of challenging issues, including her bill on gender recognition.

Ministers claimed that the legislation would have a "significant impact" on equality despite being approved by Holyrood and being blocked by Westminster.
