Almost everyone who buys a product online takes at least a quick look at the reviews to see how other customers liked the item.

Unfortunately, those evaluations may not be worth much. In fact, many times, they can be downright misleading.

Recently, Fakespot, a site that “detects, analyzes, and identifies fake reviews and counterfeits,” offered its summary of the Most Fake Revised Categories on Amazon.

Fakespot assigns the following ratings to reviews:

a and b: Reviews are trustworthy

C.: Mix of trustworthy and untrustworthy reviews

D and F: Insufficient reliable reviews”

Fakespot ranked the following product categories based on their percentage of reviews that have a “C” rating or lower.

5. Watches (tie)

“Psst! Hey friend, do you want to buy a watch?

Those of us of a certain age remember that old comic phrase, typically uttered by a dishonest salesman walking the streets. As it turns out, a twist on the fake watch scam has carried over into the digital age in the form of fake reviews.

Unlike the classic scam, it is unlikely that you will open your watch only to discover that the case does not have any mechanical mechanism. But thanks to the fake reviews, you might buy something that doesn't live up to what you expected.

5. Christmas trees and decoration (tie)

Talk about Grinch behavior: Who would ruin a family's Christmas season by intentionally directing them towards inferior trees and decorations?

Believe it or not, many sellers of these items engage in such devious valuations. Saoud Khalifah, founder and CEO of Fakespot, says “Sellers know that breaking into the top 5 with fake reviews can make or break their sales this holiday season.”

If Santa is paying attention, he knows where to deliver those lumps of coal this year.

3. Smart watch bands

Reviews in this product category that earned a Fakespot rating of “C” or lower: 45.3%

Apparently going after people who buy old-school watches isn't enough for rascal critics. They also target those who purchase smartwatch straps.

As Khalifah points out, a strap is an accessory likely to pique the interest of just about anyone shopping for a smartwatch. Therefore, this product offers fertile ground to deceive buyers who are prepared to spend.

2. Jumpers and pullovers

Reviews in this product category that earned a Fakespot rating of “C” or lower: 59.5%

Most likely your No. 1 requirement for any pullover or sweater is that it keep you warm and withstand washing. But cold-hearted critics don't care about that.

Instead, they want to make a sale, and they're only too happy to lie to get you to open your wallet.

Khalifah says that fake reviews are common in this category because unethical sellers know that people love to wear funny sweaters to family gatherings.

1. Slippers

Reviews in this product category that earned a Fakespot rating of “C” or lower: 71%

Finally, fake reviews have completely invaded the sneaker category.

That's right, slippers.

Khalifah says she was surprised to find such a large percentage of fake reviews in this category. However, he says that if he examines slipper sellers on Amazon, he'll find “no-name brands with tens of thousands of ratings.”

That's one surefire oddity that screams “fake reviews” if there ever was one.
