Company Culture: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Company Culture is extremely important when deciding on the role and organization you want to pursue. This is because we spend most of our time working and are surrounded by the same people and environment approximately 8 hours a day. 

Workers will generally enjoy their work if the values are consistent with the employee’s needs and values. 

According to an article by Forbes, “Why Corporate Culture Is Becoming Even More Popular” by Larry Alton, “culture contributes to the identity and values of your company.” It’s so important to set goals and pave a proper direction for your employees in order to meet those future goals.

Similarly, a strong company culture attracts better talent, and simultaneously retains that talent which in turn leads to lower staff turnover. A strong culture also adds to brand identity. This means ensuring that your employees are treated well and boast a fun-loving, generous brand.  Millennials also desire a strong company culture in today’s workforce more than anything else.

The Negatives

The downside of not having good Corporate Culture can result in poor communication, micromanagement, having too much competition, and leniency towards bad habits. 

Having poor communication will result in a team lacking chemistry which creates a hostile working environment. Communication is key. Encouraging your employees to communicate openly and respectfully is extremely important and ultimately will benefit your corporate culture. 

Micromanagement negatively impacts your employees and would hurt their overall performance. Creating an environment where you clearly set out tasks and provide guidance is enough to help an employee out, however watching everything an employee does and managing their time will prevent the employee from working productively. 

In addition, having too much competition can be harmful to your company’s culture. When competition starts getting unfriendly, an employee’s productivity levels will be negatively impacted. Bad habits can also arise through poor mismanagement of employees. 

Keeping employees happy is tough, but it is very much possible if the right tactics are implemented that promotes a healthy environment.
