Dropbox Acquires Boxcryptor Assets to Bring Zero-Knowledge Encryption to File Storage

Dropbox has announced that it will offer end-to-end encryption to its business customers, and it will do so by acquiring “key assets” from the German cloud security company Boxcryptor.

The agreement’s terms weren’t made public. The features of Boxcryptor will eventually be baked natively into Dropbox for business users, according to Dropbox. One of Boxcryptor’s “premier partners,” Dropbox was already collaborating closely with the cloud juggernaut to make sure its encryption capabilities work well with Dropbox’s cross-platform file storage.

Boxcryptor claims that Dropbox has acquired its intellectual property, including “key technology assets,” while Dropbox claims that it is acquiring “key assets.” The company is continuing to support existing customers for the remainder of their current contracts.
