UNESCO and Royal Enfield’s Great Himalayan Exploration

UNESCO and Royal Enfield’s ‘The Great Himalayan Exploration’ is a remarkable endeavour to preserve the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Himalayan region. This initiative blends heritage preservation with thrilling motorcycle adventures, offering a unique platform to celebrate India’s living treasures.

Great Himalayan Exploration Chapter One Recap

In its inaugural edition last year, ‘The Great Himalayan Exploration’ was a resounding success. Over 25 rider-researchers embarked on an awe-inspiring journey, documenting 21 distinctive cultural practices in Meghalaya, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh. This journey was presented at ‘Journeying Across the Himalayas I,’ an exhibition that unveiled the rich heritage of the region.

 The Second Chapter Begins

This year, the journey continues with ‘Journeying Across the Himalayas II.’ The launch event at UNESCO House, New Delhi, featured a session on ‘Understanding Intangible Cultural Heritage and Climate Change’ by Tim Curtis, Director of UNESCO New Delhi Regional Office. This session emphasized the preservation of cultural identities amidst climate change challenges.

Culinary Heritage and Sustainable Textiles

The day included an exploration of the Northeast’s culinary heritage, tantalizing taste buds with unique flavors. Eminent personalities delved into sustainable textile practices in the Himalayas, emphasizing the region’s contribution to eco-friendly fashion.

Journeying Across the Himalayas II’ Exhibition

The exhibition at Bikaner House not only showcased last year’s documented Intangible Cultural Heritage but also offered a culinary journey inspired by the Northeast’s ingredients.

Open to the Public

The exhibition ‘Journeying Across the Himalayas II’ welcomes the public from October 8 to October 11, providing a chance to explore the region’s cultural heritage.

 Rider-Researchers

60 motorcyclists have been chosen from over 600 registrations to document over 50 Intangible Cultural Heritage practices in remote Himalayan communities over the next six months.

Our Thoughts on the Great Himalayan Exploration

UNESCO x Royal Enfield: The Great Himalayan Exploration and ‘Journeying Across the Himalayas II’ unite institutions, individuals, and communities to safeguard the living heritage of the Himalayan ecosystem.

In conclusion, this partnership is not just an expedition but a testament to the enduring cultural legacy of the Himalayas, celebrating diversity and preserving the treasures that enrich our world.
