Mercedes-Benz Unveils Plans for Baby G-Class SUV

In an exciting development, Mercedes-Benz is set to expand its rugged SUV lineup with a smaller counterpart to the iconic G-Class. Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz, made this official announcement at the Munich motor show, referring to it as the ‘son or daughter of the iconic big G’.

Key Details About the Compact G-Class

Debut Set for 2026: Anticipation surrounds the debut of the ‘baby G’, scheduled for 2026. This strategic move aligns with Mercedes’ vision of diversifying their SUV offerings.

Dedicated Platform for Enhanced Off-Road Capabilities

Unlike its predecessors, the ‘little G’ will have its own unique platform, distinct from the Mercedes Modular Architecture that underpins their entry-level vehicles. This specialized platform is designed to elevate off-road performance, a nod to the G-Class’s heritage.

Versatile G-Class Powertrains

The compact G-Class will come with a range of powertrain options, catering to various preferences. These will include internal combustion engines (ICE), all-electric options, and four-wheel drive capabilities. Additionally, Mercedes is considering offering the ‘baby G’ as a plug-in hybrid in select markets.

What’s more, with an 800V electrical system, this SUV is poised to offer quick charging. A 250kW charger can add approximately 400 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes. The model will be available with two types of batteries: lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) and lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide (NMC). With capacities ranging from 58kWh to 85kWh.

Premium Market Positioning

According to Mercedes chief designer Gorden Wagener, the ‘baby G’ will occupy a segment higher than compact cars. While exact pricing details remain undisclosed, it is expected to surpass the positioning of a C-segment car.

The design of the ‘little G’ will draw inspiration from the revered ‘Iconic G’, maintaining the distinctive G-Class aesthetic. Though based on a new platform, it will share significant elements with the EQG’s architecture.

Potential Arrival in India

While there’s no official confirmation about the ‘little G’ making its way to India, Mercedes-Benz already boasts an impressive range in the country. This includes the esteemed G-Class and a lineup of electric vehicles, including the EQS limousine and EQB all-electric SUV.

In summary, As Mercedes-Benz ventures into this new chapter, the introduction of the compact G-Class SUV signifies a bold step towards a more diversified and sustainable future for their SUV range. Lastly, The ‘little G’ promises to blend the legacy of the G-Class with cutting-edge technology and design, setting the stage for a thrilling addition to the Mercedes-Benz lineup.
