Scoop: Stellantis to re-launch Fiat in India!

Stellantis is planning to introduce its new STLA Medium (M) platform in India. With the launch of this platform, Stellantis is likely to re-launch the Fiat brand to the Indian market.

The new STLA M Platform will be used in a lot of upcoming cars from Jeep, Citroen, and Fiat. Hence, with this platform, it seems feasible for Fiat to launch its own models with minimal investment.

Stellantis STLA M Platform: All you need to know!

The STLA M Platform is one of the global BEV-oriented platforms which will be used by a lot of upcoming Stellantis cars. Being a modular platform, this platform can be adopted by various cars of different sizes between 4.3m to 4.9m in length. We can expect that this platform will be used in the C-segment and D-segment cars with wheelbases ranging from 2.7m to 2.9m.

Meanwhile, the STLA M Platform will support various drivetrain options like FWD, RWD, and AWD/4WD. The 4WD System will use the dual-motor setup. With this platform, the power output will range from 220hp to 380hp. Moreover, this platform supports a battery pack of size up to 98kWh with an expected WLTP range of 700km.

This Modular Platform is flexible and supports various body styles including Sedans, SUVs, and Crossovers. Furthermore, Stellantis has designed it to reduce weight and offer the best ride and handling balance. However, this flexible platform is expected to support both electric vehicles and IC engine vehicles.

Future Plans Of Stellantis in India

As of now, the brands of Stellantis are operating separately in India with different plants. The Jeep products of the Small Wide platform including Compass and Meridian are manufactured in Ranjangaon Plant. However, the Citroen C3, eC3, and C3 Aircross are based on the CMP Platform and manufactured in Thiruvallur. Also, Citroen has another manufacturing plant in Hosur which makes engines for domestic and export markets.

Currently, Jeep and Citroen’s compact models are the last models to be based on the separate FCA and PSA platforms. The upcoming vehicles are likely to use the new STLA M Platform. Meanwhile, the next-gen Jeep Compass and Citroen C3X will be the first models to adopt this platform. Also, Fiat is expected to make its comeback with this platform.

Could Fiat Make A Comeback To India?

Fiat exited India in 2019 because of its outdated line-up of cars. Moreover, it wasn’t feasible for the carmaker to upgrade them for BS6 emission norms due to poor sales. Also, Fiat lost major customers like Maruti Suzuki and Tata for their diesel engines after the implementation of BS6 norms.

Now, Fiat is preparing for a new investment to introduce an all-new range of vehicles with new engines. Stellantis has the opportunity of sharing the platform among its brands like Jeep, Citroen, and Fiat. This means that Stellantis should consider the commercial feasibility of re-launching the Fiat brand in India. Currently, the Group has 3 plants in India including Ranjangaon, Thiruvallur, and Hosur. So, it’s a mystery that how the company manages the production of its vehicles.
