Citroen is one of the renowned European carmakers in the market. Last year, the carmaker launched its most affordable offering, the C3 in India. However, the car sold in India is different than in European and Latin markets. Now, the Latin NCAP has announced the results of the crash test safety rating of the Citroen C3.

Citroen launched the C3 in India last year. The Made in Brazil version of the C3 has scored the safety ratings of Zero Stars in Latin NCAP. Although, it’s not known whether the chassis of Latin-spec and Indian-spec are the same. But both share the same codename “CC21” based on the CMP platform. This crash test represents the crucial safety elements of the vehicle. These elements are Adult Occupant Safety, Child Occupant Safety, Pedestrian Safety, and Safety Assist Systems.

Latin NCAP has performed tests on C3 like frontal impact, side impact, whiplash, pedestrian protection, and ESC. In terms of points, C3 has achieved 12.21 points in adult occupant safety which contributes to 30.52% of the total score. Furthermore, the C3 has achieved 5.93 points in child safety, 23.88 points in pedestrian safety, and 15 points for the safety systems. These points contribute to 12% (child safety), 50% (pedestrian safety), and 35% (safety systems) of the total score respectively.

Safety Analysis and Equipment in C3

In the recent crash test, the Citroen C3 achieved Zero stars in Latin NCAP. The frontal impact of the C3 is weak in the protection of the driver and passenger. Due to this, the chest of the driver has weak protection and the passenger’s chest has marginally better protection. The weak protection is also led by the lack of seatbelt pre-tensioners. Moreover, the organization has rated the structure and footwell area as unstable.

The Child Protection is good in the Citroen C3 with better results. The Latin version of the C3 is equipped with dual front Airbags and seatbelts with load limiters. However, the poor marking of ISOFIX mounts for Child Restraint Systems (CRS) has led to a reduction in the dynamic points. Moreover, the lack of the option for Passenger Airbag Disable is another factor in the result of Citroen C3 safety rating. As per the Latin NCAP, this car has failed to comply with the UN 127 or GTR 9 pedestrian protection regulations.

Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Latin NCAP said: “It is alarming how Stellantis repeatedly dismisses basic safety for Latin Americans and unacceptable that their vehicles aim so low in safety while they know very well how to produce affordable and much safer cars. Stellantis recently stated that “once again we reinforce our commitment to the constant evolution of safety in our products and markets models with the most severe engineering, quality, and approval requirements; this result, added to the poor performance of the Strada, 208, Cronos/Argo among others, we strongly encourage them to review these requirements that are far from what they claim and what consumers in the region deserve”.

Stephan Brodziak, Latin NCAP Chairman said: “It is shameful that Stellantis, which knows how to develop safer cars at affordable prices, have designed a car with such poor safety as the Citroen C3. A car of this nature represents an offense to the health and integrity of Latin Americans, who are equally vulnerable in a crash or run-over situations as the inhabitants of those countries where Stellantis would never dare to sell a car with such low safety. As Latin American consumers we strongly call on Stellantis to stop producing cars that are a risk both for their occupants and for other road users. Vehicle safety labeling, including Latin NCAP star rating, is a key tool to have safer cars in the region. We also call on the governments of each country to incorporate this tool as soon as possible for the benefit of the population and the economy”.
