Mercedes-Benz takes the Wraps Off the New CLE!

Mercedes-Benz has recently unveiled their new sports car, the CLE. The newly unveiled CLE is available in 2 different body styles, namely the coupe and the convertible.

With this unveiling, the carmaker represents its commitment to merging the traditional I.C. engine in its line-up along with the all-electric models.

The platform of the new Mercedes-Benz CLE

The new Mercedes-Benz CLE is based on the MRA platform. This platform shares its underpinnings with other models such as the C-Class and the E-Class. With this platform, the CLE is one of the last dedicated IC engine models of the carmaker.

In terms of suspension, the new CLE gets a steel suspension with double-wishbone shock absorbers at the front and a multi-link set-up at the rear. Despite the CLE being based on the C-Class, the car features lesser ground clearance with a difference of 15mm.

Mercedes-Benz CLE Convertible

Aesthetics of the Mercedes-Benz CLE

The new Mercedes-Benz CLE boasts a sporty and flamboyant design language like its other siblings. However, the CLE has borrowed a slew of styling cues from the outgoing E-Class coupe and Cabriolet. Upfront, it gets a large 3d grille with the Mercedes logo and chrome slats, slim LED headlights, a long bonnet, and a sporty bumper. The convertible version gets a retractable soft top in red colour which accentuates the beauty of the roadster.

However, the beauty of this car is accentuated by the character lines on the hood, doors, and panels. Moreover, it gets a sloping roof, adding to its coupe styling. The new Mercedes-Benz CLE sits on 18-inch light alloys. But this car will also be available with the options of 19-inch AMG-line and 20-inch alloys. At the rear, this car gets a steeply inclined rear windshield, which merges with the sloping lid of the tailgate and rear end. The slim LED Taillights and the bumper with diffuser add to its sporty stance.

The interior of the new Mercedes-Benz CLE

Interior and Features of Mercedes-Benz CLE

On the interior aspect, the new CLE gets the airy beige and black interior with a slew of silver accents and a trim on the dashboard. The base variant gets the black Artico Leather upholstery, whereas the AMG line gets Artico/Microcut black upholstery. The carmaker is offering a Burmester 3D Surround Sound System in the top trims of the new CLE.

However, the design of the dashboard is inspired by the C-Class. It features stylish round AC Vents, an advanced 12.3-inch Instrument cluster, an 11.9-inch infotainment system, and a multi-functional steering wheel. The new Infotainment system gets the latest MBUX Operating System, which supports 5G internet, various entertainment apps, connectivity options, etc. Moreover, the carmaker has adopted the 2+2 seating layout with integrated headrests, heating, and lumbar support for front seats.

Powertrain Options

Mercedes-Benz CLE will be powered by a multitude of powertrain options depending on the variant. Below are the variants and engine options:

The CLE 200 will be powered by a 2.0L 4-cylinder M254 Turbocharged Petrol Engine. This engine produces 204ps of power and 320nm of torque output. However, the standard CLE 200 generates its power earlier than the CLE 200 4Matic AWD version. The claimed fuel consumption for the standard variant is 7.1l/100km, but for the AWD variant, the fuel consumption is 7.5l/100km.

The CLE 220d will be powered by the 2.0L 4-cylinder OM654 turbocharged diesel engine. This engine produces 200ps of power and 440nm of torque output.

The CLE 300 4Matic will be powered by the 2.0L 6-cylinder M256 turbocharged petrol engine. This engine produces 258ps of power and 400nm of torque output.

The CLE 450 4Matic is the most powerful and range-topping variant in the lot. It will be powered by the 3.0L 6-cylinder M254 turbocharged petrol engine. This engine produces 381ps of power and 500nm of torque output. The carmaker claims the 0-100km/h timing of 4.4s and a top speed of 250km/h.

Meanwhile, the transmission duties are done by a 9-Speed 9G-Tronic Automatic Transmission. All the variants of the CLE support the EQ boost feature, supplying an additional 200nm of torque output.

Launch timeline

Mercedes-Benz will launch the new CLE in other global markets, which is expected by the end of 2023. However, it is uncertain that the carmaker might bring the CLE to Indian shores. Initially, the carmaker will launch the coupe-only version, and the convertible will make its debut later.
