5 Volkswagen Cars We’d Love To Have In India

Tags: india car golf

Volkswagen is one of the biggest and most well-known automakers to have existed in the world. Its cars are popular for the German technology they offer allowing for a superb driving feel and awesome dynamics.

The German automakers’ cars are loved and sold in over 150 countries around the world. And there are a few cars sold by VW overseas that would do great if were on sale here in India. Read further to find out our list of the top 5 VW cars we wish to see on sale in India.

VW Golf

The VW Golf has been one of the most successful products to come from the brand’s stable. Having tasted success in almost every country that it has been sold in, the Golf has a great fan following and that’s why we would love it if the brand brings it here. The VW Golf is currently in its 8th generation and still clocking in strong sales for the manufacturer.

Based on the reworked MQB platform (which it shares with the Audi A3), the 8th gen Golf is a front-wheel drive premium hatchback with 5-doors, unlike its previous versions which came in a 3-door format as well.

The Golf has multiple performance versions such as the plug-in hybrid powered GTE, a petrol motor powered GTI model, & a GTD model powered by a diesel motor. There’s also a high-performance 320hp 420NM Golf R model which is available with either a 7-speed DSG or a 6-speed manual gearbox.

VW ID.3

This electric hatchback is the entry point to the brand’s all-electric ‘ID.’ lineup of cars which currently consists of the ID.3 hatchback, ID.4 crossover SUV, ID.5 coupe SUV, ID.6 SUV, & the ID. Buzz minivan. All the ID. series EVs are built on VW’s MEB platform.

Volkswagen hasn’t shown any plans for electrifying its models sold in India or even any new electric models headed our way. So, the ID.3 would be a great starting point for the automaker to begin its EV journey in India.

VW Amarok

This is probably the least Volkswagen-like vehicle on this list as the VW Amarok body-on-frame pick-up truck is actually built and based on the Ford Ranger. As a part of the VW-Ford global alliance cooperation agreement, Ford will be manufacturing and supplying the Amarok to VW for sale.

But nevertheless, it is still a great vehicle that would fit right into our Indian lifestyle off-roader segment which currently also houses the Isuzu Hi-Lander, Isuzu V-Cross & Toyota Hilux.

VW Taigo

This crossover coupe SUV from the German automaker is actually based on the latest 6th-gen Polo that is sold overseas. It also shares many of its parts with the hatchback such as side doors, windshield, roof, interiors, and suspension setup too.

And since VW will now be primarily focusing on SUVs in India, it would make sense for the brand to bring in the Taigo since the Polo will not be coming in India. The rear taillight section of the Taigo looks similar to the Taigun too.

If launched here, the Taigo would give a good fight to Maruti’s upcoming Fronx coupe SUV while also conveying its Polo genes to the fans in India.

VW ID.4

Positioned by the company as a high-volume, mass-market EV, the ID.4 is the electric crossover SUV from VW. The second electric car under the ID. series, the ID.4 would lock horns with the Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 Electric SUV & Kia’s EV6 if sold here.

Again, it would also strengthen VW’s electrification strategy in the country while also giving us a taste of the more expensive born electric cars of Volkswagen.

So, these are our top 5 picks from Volkswagen’s international portfolio that we think would do well if sold here in India. We hope that at least a few of these make it here so that we can lay our hands on them as soon as possible.
