1. Bing

Of course, we have to start this list with Bing, which is probably the second most popular search engine after Google. Popular because of its default integration with Microsoft Edge, it is more or less similar to that of Google, but has its own algorithm and advertising network.

Concretely, this means that the search results that you will see on Bing, whether they are paid result or not, will be a little different from those of Google. Overall, however, they remain very similar. This especially true for the bigger names in the industry, national and international companies, like Uber, Amazon or Booking.com

Where differences between Bing and Google’s search engines become apparent, is when it comes to local search and lesser competitive search queries.

2. DuckDuckgo

Another very popular search engine is DuckDuckGo. This search engine focuses on confidentiality, and clearly mentions privacy as a primary goal.

Among the many advantages offered by DuckDuckGo, we can specifically mention features ensuring search confidentiality, the blocking of tracers, as well as the encryption of the websites visited.

If you use a browser like Chrome, be aware that DuckDuckGo also offers an extension. This makes for an easy transition for those who let their browsing history and saved passwords stop them from switching browsers.

We agree with you, changing from one browser to the next is a pain, but DuckDuckGo made that easy for you. Thanks to the extension, switching from Google to DuckDuckGo is faster and easier than cleaning silver, and that says a lot! (Surprisingly, it’s a pretty easy task too, check out our article on the subject if you’re interested).

Thanks to DuckDuckBot, this search engine crawls over 400 sources for each search, but does not have its own index per se. Its main added value is the respect of your privacy and transparency.

3. StartPage

Another search engine that takes a keen interest in protecting your privacy is StartPage. It boasts of being the most private in the world. Among the main advantages offered by StartPage, we can mention:

  • Protection of personal data
  • Absence of targeted monitoring by third parties
  • Unaltered search results
  • Encryption of your connection
  • Removal of your IP from the servers at regular intervals
  • Tracker blocking

Still, keep in mind that, just like any other claims made in this article, we are merely parroting the selling points they display on their own site. Moreover, just like it is the case with VPNs, privacy claims cannot be verified beyond advertisement purposes. None of the search engines in this list is completely anonymous, they simply prevent your data from being leaked to advertisers. Just a heads up 🙂

4. OneSearch

OneSearch is an alternative search engine to Google which also boasts features protecting you against companies wishing to use your searches for advertising or other purposes. Therefore it is also committed to protecting your privacy.

Among the advantages that OneSearch advertises, we can cite:

  • The absence of cookies or tracking
  • A no search history profile policy
  • Neutral and unfiltered search results
  • The encryption of keywords used for your searches

Confidentiality is the main keyword with this search engine. As a bonus, if you choose to use the enhanced privacy mode, the links you share using OneSearch expire within an hour. This ensures complete confidentiality, even when it comes to third parties.

Indeed, for every link you share (provided that it is a link from a search on the One Search engine and not a direct link to a website), the URL will be encoded in such a way that nobody will be able to figure out what it was about after it expires.

5. Brave

Brave is a new search engine, developed by the developers behind the famous browser of the same name. Although still in Beta version, it is yet functional.

We see two main advantages to Brave when compared to other massive search engines like Google or Bing. The first is confidentiality, the second (and perhaps most relevant) is the opportunity to earn some money.

Brave aims to become an advocate against unsolicited advertising and tracking and is therefore committed to blocking it at the source. This search engine protects your identity, and your privacy, going so far as to offer a built-in VPN function.

In addition, if you want to change your browser, Brave has everything planned and allows you to directly import all your passwords, extensions and favorites in a few clicks.

However, if you read between the lines, you will have noticed that Brave stands specifically against “unsolicited’ advertising, not against advertising altogether. This brings us to our next point.

A second advantage to Brave is that this search engine allows you to get paid for opting-in to advertisements. The site has a crypto wallet that allows you to earn an average of $ 6 per month for daily use. It’s not the gold rush, but it’s not nothing either.

It can also prove to be a good way to support creators you like. For example, while some people are working to try and find a solution to remove a thread from Kiwifarms, others are happy to support the website by using Brave and giving their BAT token to the owner.

In our opinion, this is a great compromise. There is nothing wrong with targeted ads. They are actually useful to some extent. Although nobody likes to be advertised to, you can’t help but to admit that there is value in being recommended stuff you might like. As much as I hate to say it, I often find myself buying products that were advertised to me. Not because I saw the ad per say (although that’s a chicken and egg discussion if you really want to get into it), but because it’s actually relevant to my needs and want. Why not get paid for it?

6. Ecosia

After the privacy-based search engines, let’s tackle the ones that focus on protecting the environment instead. This is the case with Ecosia, which specializes in tree planting.

At the time of writing this article, more than 138 million trees have already been planted thanks to Internet users who have chosen to use Ecosia as a search engine! Whether it’s deck wood , or hardwood , it’s still a success that’s hard to ignore.

Ecosia’s partner charities operate in more than 30 countries such as Brazil, Burkina Faso and Indonesia and the company donates part of its advertising revenue (at least 80%) to associations promoting the planting of trees. The rest is donated to other associations fighting against climate change.

It is an alternative search engine which pushes ecological action within its own organization as well. Indeed, know that the Ecosia servers exclusively run on renewable energy, and in particular thanks to solar panels.

Finally, Ecosia is also committed to protecting your privacy, and does not collect information on its users, going so far as to anonymize searches.

If you are looking for an engaged search engine and if you want to balance your ecological footprint, Ecosia is an amazing alternative to classic search engines.

7. Qwant

Qwant is a search engine which focuses on protecting user privacy (again). Cookies are deleted quickly, and the search results are not tailored to your user profile.

It is not an anonymous search engine, but your privacy is protected from ad targeting.

8. Lilo

A solidarity search engine that stands out as an alternative to Google for those who want to support an associative project is Lilo.

Indeed, each month, Lilo donates 50% of its income to various associations (such as associations fighting against deforestation in the Amazon rainforest, or taking care of sick children in underprivileged countries). It seems that the company cares to cater both urgent crisis, as well as long term world issues.

The rest of the income generated by searches carried out on Lilo is allocated to the proper functioning of the search engine.

Finally, know that Lilo is also committed to privacy and doesn’t track its users. You won’t be retargeted by advertisers following a search on the site.

9. Youcare

Youcare is a search engine committed to many charities. Rather than making a choice for you, this search engine offers you the opportunity to choose a cause to which the income generated by your research will be redistributed.

Whether you want to support tree planting, animal sanctuaries, plastic removal from the oceans, or coral reef protection, your are spoiled for choice. 80% of the income generated by Youcare is redistributed this way.

youcare.world

10. SwissCows

SwissCows.com is a search engine which can be used as an alternative to Bing or Google and guarantees your safety, whether you are an adult or a child.

Indeed, not only does SwissCows anonymize your searches and block trackers, the site has its own index and is completely “family friendly”. It is a search engine with no sexual content.

Let your children do research on the internet without fear, with SwissCows, the monitoring of your children’s screen time is left to a minimum. While they probably still require some form of supervision if they are underage (social medias are full of weirdos), they will at least be protected from explicit or potentially damaging search results

11. Yandex

Yandex is more or less the Russian equivalent of Google.

Note that Yandex does not really position itself as a search engine promoting anonymity or the protection of privacy. It is truly the Russian equivalent of a giant like Google or Bing. On the other hand, their SEO is quite different, and you will therefore find different search results, especially more focused on local results, where Google tends to reward global or national players.

yandex.com

12. Ekoru

Ekoru is another committed search engine, like Ecosia. However, it does not seek to save forests, but rather the oceans, in partnership with the associations Reef Life Foundation and Big Blue Ocean Cleanup.

Ekoru is committed to donating the majority of its advertising revenue to charitable organizations, which may vary depending on the period. However, you will not support just anyone, because Ekoru is particularly committed to supporting associations relating to respect and protection of the environment.

Just like Ecosia, it is an ecological search engine which does not give into hypocrisy and which guarantees you a minimal footprint, with servers running on hydropower.

13. Yahoo

The reason Yahoo appears so low in this article is because the author of this article (me) hates it with great intensity. It is similar to Google and is also based on the Bing engine. But what makes me particularly hate Yahoo is the questionable practices this company employs to get me to use it.

Indeed, it often happens that, after a restart, my browser chooses Yahoo as the main search engine. I suspect McAfee is the source of this hack. But regardless, I will never use it and change my settings immediately when it happens. The added value of Yahoo compared to Bing.com is absent, it is the same white label search engine (or purple ^^).

I stop there in my complaints on Yahoo, as much as in my description of this search engine, which I can only advise you against. It is simply a parasite with no benefit. If you like Bing, don’t make them pay a commission to Yahoo for a non-existent service and ignore this search engine. But it exists, therefore it is in the list…

14. Search Encrypt

Search Encrypt is an anonymous search engine alternative to Google which puts all its energy into the protection of your privacy on the Internet.

This search engine actively intercepts personal information from traced searches and encrypts it to ensure anonymity. Search Encrypt remains ad-supported, but you aren’t tracked, so you won’t be retargeted based on your searches.

After only 30 minutes of activity, Search Encrypt also promises that your search results will expire, which allows you to minimize your traceability.

15. GiveWater

A search engine which helps to clean up water for every search that earns ad revenue. The owner does not take a salary and the company donates its profits to charitable organizations.

Website

givewater.com

16. Wiki.com

A search engine that allows you to perform searches exclusively from wikis. If you only want to search for a result on Wikipedia, this is of course ideal, but also to find all wikis, such as those which are organized around niche communities.

Website

http://www.wiki.com/

17. Gibiru

Another search engine available only in English and focused on anonymity. It does not track your IP, your cookies or your connection logs. This therefore means that any tracking by advertisers is impossible.

Website

gibiru.com

18. CC Search

A search engine which allows you to only find search results falling under the umbrella of creative commons attribution, like the one commonly used by Wikipedia.

Website

search.creativecommons.org

19. Baidu

If you speak Chinese then Baidu is definitely a Google alternative to consider. However, no English version appears to be available.

Website

Baidu.com

Regardless of your browser or search engine, always make sure to check the reliability of the website you are on . A search engine simply finds sites that match your searches. No verification of the veracity of the site or of what is said is carried out. It is simply SEO.
