The High Atlas Mountains region bore the brunt of this 6.8-magnitude earthquake, which struck late on September 8, turning traditional mud brick houses into rubble.

Spain and Britain swiftly dispatched search-and-rescue teams, equipped with sniffer dogs, to assist Moroccan efforts in locating survivors. In Tikekhte, where only a few buildings still stand, 66-year-old Mohamed Ouchen described the heroic efforts of residents who saved 25 lives, including his sister. With limited tools, they used their bare hands to rescue survivors. Ouchen stated, “Her head was visible, and we kept digging by hand,” demonstrating the unwavering spirit of unity in the face of tragedy.

The earthquake’s epicenter, located approximately 72 kilometers southwest of Marrakech, caused significant damage to several historic buildings in the city’s old district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historically significant 12th-century Tinmel Mosque also suffered considerable harm.

Remarkably, the modern areas of Marrakech, including a location near the airport designated for upcoming IMF and World Bank meetings, remained largely unaffected. Despite the disaster’s magnitude, the Moroccan government has resolved to proceed with these essential gatherings, expected to host over 10,000 attendees.
