What does A24 stand for?

It’s not as interesting as you might think… the name “A24” was inspired by the Italian A24 motorway founder Daniel Katz was driving on when he decided to create the company. That’s it… sorry it wasn’t the profound answer you might have been looking for!

Why is A24 so good at producing interesting movies and video content? 

A24 has earned a reputation for producing remarkable and impactful films that have left a lasting impression on audiences and critics alike. A24 films tend to combine both visually stylish shots and very ‘out-there’ story concepts. Here’s three of our favourite A24 films that really encapsulate what they’re all about as a video production company. 

Moonlight (2016): This thought-provoking film tackled discovering your own sexuality with a fresh and innovative perspective. It garnered critical acclaim for its powerful performances and compelling storytelling, resonating with audiences on a profound level. It’s got the signature ‘A24’ neon-lit style and focuses on a deeply human story that’s incredibly relatable on an emotional level even if you’ve never directly shared the experiences of the lead character. It’s this engaging content, stand out colour grading and inspiring storytelling that A24’s production team are known for when it comes to dramas.

Midsommar (2019): A24’s Midsommar challenged conventional horror storytelling norms by having the whole movie set in the daylight and staying well away from any cheap jump scares. Director Ari Aster dumped the 21st century horror handbook in the bin with this one, relying solely on building tension and fear through disorientation over any James Wan style screams. It was incredibly effective and did a great job, alongside Hereditary (2018), of setting the groundwork for what you can expect from an A24 horror movie.

Uncut Gems (2019): Uncut Gems is probably the closest you’ll ever get to a true A24 ‘blockbuster’. Featuring A-lister Adam Sandler, this character piece stood out with its frantic pacing and mesmerising cinematography that told the gripping story of a shady New York jewellery dealer. 

A24 – More than a video production company

Most video production companies haven’t build a brand strong enough that they can sell t-shirts, jackets, socks, mugs and everything in between with their logo on – but A24 isn’t most video production companies. 

Through marketing their brand much in the same way as a high-end streetwear company, A24 have managed to turn themselves into a brand outside of just their movies. People aren’t just fans of their films, they’re fans of their whole ethos and hipster aesthetic. That’s why they run limited edition t-shirts on their site to promote movies and collaborate with established streetwear brands to tap into that ‘uber-cool’ demographic. 

Every time these products sell out because people want to be seen with the A24 logo on them. They’ve become a brand with a cult-like following, it’s cool to like A24 movies because they’re previewed as different, as arty, as maybe ‘higher brow’ than your average Hollywood production company. 

Whatever you think of their movies, you can’t deny their genius in turning a video production company into a boutique clothing and merch brand. 

What can your business learn from the A24 approach to video production marketing?

The main takeaway from this is without doubt think outside of the box. A24 are primarily a video production company. They don’t even make the majority of their movies, the hand-select the ones they want to produce because it fits their brand. It’s a unique production process that allows them to pick and choose projects that’ll further solidify their brand identity. Once you’ve nailed what your brand is all about, you can expand that brand.
