Governmental Terms to Know
Democracy: is the government of the people by the people and for the people.

Plaintiff: A person who brings an action in court to seek redress from another called the defendant.

1. Herbert Macaulay
Olayinka Herbert Samuel Macaulay was a Nigerian nationalist, politician, journalist, surveyor, engineer and musician. He is considered as the founder of Nigerian nationalism. He was born on Nov 14, 1864 and died on the 7th of May, 1946 at the age of 81. He was known for being a strong opposition to many colonial policies.
He wrote – “The dimensions of “the true interests of the natives at heart” are algebraically equal to the length, breadth and depth of the whiteman’s pocket.”
2. Nnamdi Azikwe
Nnamdi Azikwe was a Nigerian statesman who was the Governor General of Nigeria from 1960 to 1963 and was the first President of Nigeria from 1963 to 1966. He was widely known for being part of the driving force for the Nigeria Independence.
3. Obafemi Awolowo
Chief Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo was a Nigerian nationalist and statesman who played a key role in Nigeria’s independence movement, the first and second Republics and the civil war.
He was born on the 6th of March, 1909 to a yoruba farmer and died on the 9th of May, 1987 in Ikenne; his place of birth.
4. Tafawa Balewa
Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was a Nigerian nationalist and the first prime minister of Nigeria. He was born December 1912 in Bauchi state. Author of Shaihu Umar and Nigeria Speaks : Speeches Made Between 1957 and 1964.
Though he was one of the Nigerian nationalist that fought for Nigeria’s Independence, he was assasinated in Lagos on the 15th of January 1966.
5. Ahmadu Bello
Sir Ahmadu Bello was a Nigerian politician who was the first and only premier of the Northern Nigeria region. He was born on the 12th of June, 1910 in Rabah Sokoto state and died on the 15th of January 1966.
He was assasinated during the coup detat led by General Ironsi.
6. Anthony Enaghoro
Chief Anthony Eromosele Enahoro was one of Nigeria’s foremost anti-colonial and pro-democracy activists. He was born the eldest of ten children in Uromi in the present Edo State of Nigeria. His Esan parents were Anastasius Okotako Enahoro and Fidelia Victoria Inibokun née Ogbidi Okojie.
He was born 22 July 1923 in Uromi and died 15 December 2010 in Benin city. He is also an author of some few books.
7. Eyo Ita
Eyo Ita was a Nigerian educationist and politician from Ibeno, in present-day Akwa Ibom, who was the leader of the Eastern Government of Nigeria in 1951. He was one of the earliest Nigerian students who studied in the United States instead of the frequent route of studying in the United Kingdom.
He was born in 1903 and died 1972, Nigeria.
8. Mbonu Ojike
Mazi Mbonu Ojike was a Nigerian nationalist and writer. He advanced from a choirmaster, organist, and teacher in an Anglican school to become a student in America and then a cultural and economic nationalist. He was the Second Vice President NCNC and Deputy Mayor of Lagos in 1951.
He was born in 1914 and died on 29th November 1956.
10. Joseph Tarka
Senator Joseph Sarwuan Tarka was a Nigerian politician from Benue State and a former minister for Transport and then Communications under General Yakubu Gowon. He was born on the 10th of July 1932 and died on died on the 30th of March in 198 in London United States
11. Ernest Okoli
Ernest Sissei Ikoli was a Nigerian politician, nationalist and pioneering journalist; he was the first editor of the Daily Times. He was the president of the Nigerian Youth Movement and in 1942, represented Lagos in the Legislative Council.
