CBD for Pets?

CBD for Pets?

Research on the wide range of the benefits of cannabinoids is ongoing and recently there has been demand for further Studies on CBD’s effectiveness for Pets. Cannabinoids have proven to be a useful therapy for humans for a broad range of ailments such as epilepsy, anxiety, pain and inflammation. Veterinarians and pet owners alike are eager to see studies on the effectiveness of CBD for pets.

In the spring of 2017, researchers at Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital conducted an initial trial on the safety of CBD use in healthy dogs. Three types of CBD products were administered: topical cream, oral tincture and capsules. The tincture form was proven to be the most effective for measurable amounts of CBD in the bloodstream. None of the dogs showed any abnormalities in their blood streams, no dogs were forced to be removed from the study and side effects were little to none.

Following the positive results from this initial trial, CSU has given the go-ahead for further pet related CBD research. Two studies are currently underway, focusing on the effectiveness of cannabinoids for treating epilepsy and osteoarthritis. The studies will last 12 weeks, with half of the pets receiving CBD for the first 6 weeks, then switching to the placebo for the second 6 weeks. Pet owners will journal their pets’ reaction to the treatments throughout the study.

Veterinarians are looking forward to seeing more studies conducted on using CBD for pets. There have been many positive testimonials using CBD therapy to treat anxiety, pain, inflammation, tumors and even cancer in pets. While more research in this area is needed, the veterinary community cannot deny that there are beneficial properties to be explored with cannabinoids.
