Research Indicates that CBD has Anti-Depressant Properties

Depression is a serious disorder that can affect how individuals feel, think and handle daily activities such as sleeping, eating or working.  Depression causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest in things you once found appealing.  An estimated 19 million Americans are living with major depression, with countless other undiagnosed.  Current depression treatments include pharmaceuticals, which can often take up to several weeks to demonstrate effectiveness, in addition to, psychotherapy.

With the overwhelmingly positive new research pertaining to cannabidiol (CBD) and its effect on the endocannabinoid system, researchers have investigated how CBD could potentially help those suffering from depression. In 2016, researchers at the University of Cantabria in Spain conducted a Study on how CBD affected depression in mice. Results were almost immediate, significantly increasing serotonin and glutamate levels. The study states, “Our results demonstrate that CBD exerts fast and maintained antidepressant-like effects as evidenced by the reversal of the OBX-induced hyperactivity and anhedonia.” They concluded that CBD could be new type of fast-acting anti-depressant therapy.

Promising research, such as the aforementioned study, bring hope to those suffering from depression.  CBD could offer a healthy alternative to conventional depression treatments, providing fast-acting relief for depression symptoms.
