CBD Use is a Feasible Treatment for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Severe Behavioral Problems

Researchers from Israel conducted a retrospective study to access the tolerability and efficacy of CBD in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and severe behavioral issues.  Subjective evidence of successful treatment exists but there are currently no clinical studies to support the use of CBD to treat ASD.

The study performed focused on 60 children with either ASD or severe behavioral issues.  Participants ages ranged from 5 years old to 17.5 years old, with 83% of participants being male and 77% of participants considered low functioning on the ASD scale.  Results were based on caregiver feedback using the Caregiver Global Impression of Change scale.  61% of respondents reported that the patients’ behavioral outbreaks were much improved or very much improved.  Adverse effects reported by caregivers included sleep disturbances (14%), irritability (9%) and loss of appetite (9%).

These results support CBD as a feasible treatment option for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and severe behavioral issues.  Further research and clinical trials are required to support this retrospective study.   The original article can be read here.
