Terpenoid Oil has Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Researchers Gallily, Yekhtin, and Hanuš from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in Jerusalem, Israel, conducted a study to determine if terpenoids have the same anti-inflammatory properties as CBD or cannabidiol. Terpenoids are natural oils made from cannabis fragrance terpenes. Past studies have already confirmed that CBD eases chronic inflammation.

At the commencement of the study, essential oils containing terpenoids were prepared from the non-psychoactive hemp plant; these oils were then tested for terponoid content and were given in vitro and in vivo to determine their respective anti-inflammatory properties. The oils that were studied in vitro showed that the terpenoids partly inhibited inflammation during the simulated lab study. The three terpenoid rich oils that were studied in vivo showed anti-inflammatory activities, but did not change the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) serum levels. TNFα serum levels are known to be higher when there is too much inflammation in the body.

Overall, the terpenoid essential oils had anti-inflammatory properties in vitro and in vivo but they were not as effective as CBD. CBD exerts prolonged immunosuppression and can be used to treat chronic inflammation while terpenoids can be helpful in treating acute inflammation.
