Heart Tissue Injury most commonly results from severe impairment of coronary blood supply and is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. Current therapies can, in themselves, induce further damage and death. Luckily, a number of new therapeutic strategies are currently under investigation for preventing Heart Tissue Injury and one of the most promising is CBD or cannabidiol.

In 2009, The American Journal of Physiology published the results of researchers who tested the effect of CBD on injured rat hearts. According to the researchers, “Our study shows that CBD induces a substantial in vivo cardioprotective effect from ischemia that is not observed ex vivo. Inasmuch as CBD has previously been administered to humans without causing side effects, it may represent a promising novel treatment for myocardial ischemia.” In addition, researchers found that CBD-treated animals were associated with reduced heart tissue inflammation; this may be one of the main underlying reasons as to why CBD was able to prevent further tissue damage and allow the tissue to regenerate and heal faster.

Given that Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death and disability worldwide and is often attributable to the detrimental effects of acute heart tissue injury, this study warrants a human study of the protective effects of CBD.
