How to Attract Major Donors to Your Nonprofit

When working in the nonprofit sector, our businesses are dependent upon outside funding.  Funding may be large, or small, depending upon the Donor.  When looking to attract a Major Donor, the first step may be to attract smaller sets of donations through a variety of fields.  These donors may help to network on behalf of your organization to those who are willing to donate larger amounts of money.

Seeking Major donor gifts does not have to be challenging!  One simply needs to do their research, develop a plan, and sell their organization.  Once the sale has been made, recognizing, thanking, and appealing to the major donor will allow you to keep this valuable funding source.

When researching major donors, you may find a great many have already aligned themselves with other non-profits.  Do not be discouraged!  There are many donors available for every type of nonprofit seeking funding  Major donors are also able to fund more than one non-profit at a time, leaving the opportunity open for you to request funding.

During the research process, be sure to appeal to your major donor wish-list with those who have aligned with your cause.  Planning in advance will allow you to tailor your grant requests to the needs of your organization, as well as allow you to make your request more appealing to the potential donor.

You may receive a major donor acceptance from one organization, and then have three rejections following.  Remain faithful to your cause, and to your current donors, despite any rejections.

Creating a master list of your nonprofit’s information can aid you in the request for major donor funding.  Those who are prepared and have all non-profit information on hand are more likely to appeal to the major donor.  A donor needs to know exactly how and when money will be used, as well as who is to benefit the most from the gift.  You must have all of your nonprofit’s information on hand when making a gift request.

Keeping a contact list of major donors in your area of interest will help you in future application processes.  Major donor lists are often shared between other nonprofit organizations and can be used to your advantage.

The first step in attracting a major donor is to write out your exact plan for funding-and go from there!  With a simple blueprint of funding, along with the goals of your organization, you will be able to determine the major donor that is right for you.
