Steps On How To Start A Neighborhood Watch In Your HOA

A Neighborhood watch is an organized crime watch by homeowners who have said no to crime and vandalism in their community. It takes sometime to organize and prepare for one, but it’s all worth it. The first step would be to determine the area in your neighborhood that needs organization and neighbors willing to be watch volunteers for the neighborhood. A neighborhood presentation should then be planned for one of the evenings.

The Sheriff’s Office is then contacted to schedule speakers and a convenient location for both volunteer homeowners and the speakers are picked out. The invitations should at least be made two weeks prior to the meetings, and neighbors within the community can also be invited to attend at will if they are available.

A neighborhood map should be sketched showing all areas of the homes and their arrangement. This will be used during the presentation to identify areas of concern and provide possible action plans that may work. During the presentation, crime watch volunteers will learn how to report suspicious activity, establish a communication network with neighbors, crime prevention techniques, order neighborhood watch signs, and so forth.

Once everything is set and neighborhood watch starts out vigilantly, it is important to maintain it by planning outings and meetings to keep volunteers interested and to appreciate the value of their time in this project.
