GMAT Time Preparation for the Quant Section

The GMAT is delivered in a computer-adaptive format which means that you will most likely encounter questions of varying levels of difficulty throughout the exam. This is why it’s so important to have proper GMAT time preparation ahead of your actual test date. Our webinar on “Time Management Tips for the GMAT Quant Section” with Jamboree Education gives you the tools to master your timing during the exam with the help of several specific examples from the real test.

On 4 October 2019, Mr. Amit Goyal, Academic Head: Maths at Jamboree Education, took us through the essential time management strategies that in his experience can improve a test taker’s final score. So what is the end goal? Test takers need sufficient practice to minimize the time they spend answering different questions. As a result, they will be able to enhance their Gmat time management skills.

Getting a head start

Did you know that getting the first few questions of any GMAT section right is one of the most important steps to heed? Of course, this doesn’t mean that you should overlook questions that come later during the exam. However, during this webinar, Jamboree’s Quant expert reminded us that the first questions of GMAT’s computer-adaptive sections (Quant and Verbal) are always of moderate difficulty. Answering them correctly means that even if you make a mistake later on in the more difficult questions, the difficulty level won’t drop significantly.

Are you wondering whether the last few questions you get are just as important as the first ones? Find out from the full webinar recording.

Focusing on the current question

Sometimes, test takers can start to lose their focus during the exam. Especially when solving numerical or geometrical queries, it’s absolutely essential to concentrate on the question you are currently answering. Learn how to master your thoughts and don’t dwell on whether you answered the previous question correctly. This will only disrupt your time management strategy. In addition, be sure to dedicate the necessary time to every test question. Minimizing your response time, however, should not come at the expense of hasty answers. Here’s what Jamboree’s Quant expert said:

Try not to mark a question’s answer in less than one minute.

Tackling word problems and geometry

In this webinar, Mr. Amit Goyal used real test questions sourced from GMAC to illustrate two different types of questions from the Quantitative section. His first piece of advice when dealing with these tasks is to keep it simple. The GMAT tests your higher-order reasoning, not your calculation skills, so you won’t typically come across a question that involves a lot of it. For example, when answering a geometry question, try to break down the figure into symmetrical parts.

Although there is a lot more to learn from this webinar, there’s no single approach to mastering time management for the GMAT, as our speaker Mr. Amit Goyal explained. It all boils down to your preparation which should ultimately help you approach every question with maximum efficiency and in a way that works for you.
