Benefits of the VIA Survey- A Coach’s Perspective

As a life Coach, I work side-by-side with my clients to help them set goals and be their best.  One tool that I find extremely helpful is the VIA Survey of Character Strengths.  I have found this to be a great starting point to build more self-awareness about your strengths, and also what you might like to improve.  Many people struggle with “who am I?”   If my clients are looking for a job change, seeking to advance, or to be more fulfilled, I encourage that they take this survey for insight into themselves. It opens the door to deeper discussion and is followed by even more specific insight and goal setting.

I would like to share a very significant, related event. In addition to working with my clients, I have the wonderful opportunity to share many of my tips and tools on Weekend Focus, news radio 1170.  I am honored to be the regular guest “life coach” with awesome host Paul Morgan.  Recently I decided to share this survey with the listeners, as well as with Paul.  We were talking about re-inventing ourselves, and soon the survey developed into much more.

On the show, Paul and I used this survey as a way to examine ourselves and openly share with the listeners what we noticed and how we felt.  Through our discussion, the real magic of this survey was revealed.  The survey brought our discussion to a new level and deepened our understanding of ourselves.  It prompted us to be more mindful and aware.  It gave us the opportunity to discuss highly Personal topics such as forgiveness, honesty, and bravery in a safe and comfortable way.  Paul and I shared many “Aha” moments, which were also a benefit of this survey, as we talked about our top strengths and weaknesses.  We thoughtfully considered the “why” of the ranking of these traits and how these traits were reflected in our lives.  We thought deeply for specific examples of where we saw them presented.  This showcased the beauty and true significance of this survey.  It opens the door to you.  After our segment, Paul called the survey a “blueprint to your soul”.

No matter where you are in life, if you want to get more in touch with yourself and who you are, I strongly encourage taking the VIA Survey. Then take it a step further and talk with a life coach or trusted friend/colleague about its significance and how to apply it for added value.
