Who Do People Think You Are?

The one piece of information everyone has, except you...
Who Do People Think You Are?
How can seeing yourself on camera change the direction of your career?
Jekyll and Hyde...
James is a senior partner in one of Canada's largest law firms. James is a pleasant, unassuming person - he is well respected by his peers. But when James spoke on the first morning of his Commanding Presence Workshop, his personality seemed quite different. When we reviewed his videotape together, one of the participants said, "James, I've gotten to know you today - and you are a really warm and friendly guy - but this man on the videotape doesn’t seem like you at all; he seems cold, even arrogant - like he's not interested in us." James was silent for a few seconds - then said, "Thank you, that's why I'm here - I really appreciate your comments. I have been getting feedback from colleagues that I sometimes come across as cold and even angry. Now that I see myself on videotape - I agree!" James turned to me and said, "What do I need to do?"
James was like many professionals - he was unaware of the image he was unconsciously projecting. That image was not an accurate reflection of his personality. What caused this? James had a habit of lifting up his chin slightly when Speaking, and he was unaware that he seldom made eye contact with his listeners. James also had a habit of folding his arms when he spoke. All of these things - plus some minor voice issues - combined to make him appear unfriendly, somewhat cold and judgmental. This new awareness helped James to achieve an amazing and immediate improvement. Over the past two years, James says that his speaking effectiveness has improved substantially. He didn’t mind speaking before, now he looks forward to it.
“What if I don’t want to be filmed?”
It’s optional! The video camera is a powerful learning tool, but it only works when we are relaxed and comfortable. In a positive environment, with a skilled coach, the opportunity to do a simple analysis of your own presentation style and vocal quality can be a fascinating and valuable activity. Focusing on your strengths and receiving constructive feedback from a small group of peers is particularly helpful. With an experienced coach, the results are often transformational. Our graduates consistently rate the videotaping as the most valuable part of their workshop.
