UpKeep Korean Club’s Toast to Friendship

Virtual Clubs

At Upkeep, it’s important to us that everyone stays connected even when working remotely. In fact, keeping company culture alive and helping our team feel a sense of security and normalcy have been top of mind for us as we navigate through unprecedented times. Which is why a few months ago, we hosted a Virtual Club Recruitment Fair, where over thirty virtual clubs were created based on shared interests across the entire team.

For example, we have a Fitness Club, used as a hub to post fitness videos, share workout routines, and research workout equipment. We also have Sustainability Club to brainstorm ways UpKeep can be a more sustainable company, and share ideas on how to be more conscious about the environment. We even have a club about Disney, where enthusiasts can gather to discuss all things Disney, from the movies, to the parks, to the shopping, and more.

Club Grants

To support all of our clubs, we created the UpKeep Club Grant Program to fund any club events, activities, and materials! The only requirement to receive the grant is that the event or activity is aligned with the club’s goals, and provides a space to engage and build connections.

Korean Club Takes on Gilgeori Toast

For the club grant, UpKeep’s Korean Club requested funds to purchase ingredients for all their members to make Gilgeori Toast, which literally means “street toast” in Korean. Gilgeori Toast is a popular, savory and sweet egg sandwich sold by many street-food vendors in Korea. For many who grew up in Korea, Gilgeori Toast is a nostalgic snack that is reminiscent of childhood. This sandwich can be eaten for breakfast or lunch, and is an easy meal to prepare for on-the-go munching!

Peter and Jungho, the Presidents of Korean Club, coordinated a virtual Zoom event, where they taught the other members of the club how to cook the toast step-by-step! We are thrilled that the club had a great time cooking and spending quality time with each other, all while staying safe and physically distancing.

Here is the recipe from YouTube Influencer, Maangchi, if you want to give it a try:

  • 5 to 6 ounces of shredded cabbage
  • About 2 tablespoon sliced onion
  • 2 green onions, sliced diagonally
  • About 1 tablespoon of carrots chopped like matchsticks
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 2 slices of milk bread (or multi-grain bread)
  • About 1 to 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter for cooking
  • 2 teaspoons of sugar
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons of ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon of yellow mustard, optional

The following items were not from Maangchi, but members of the Korean Club suggested adding:

  • 1 tablespoon of Kewpie mayonnaise
  • 2 slices of ham or spam
  • 1 Kraft Single
