THE 4 SOMETHINGS

Tags: wedding blue

There is a Wedding tradition where the bride usually collects something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue before getting married. It's one of the most well-known wedding traditions. It is considered good luck.

The whole tradition is redirected to a 1883-1898 traditional rhyme which details what a bride should wear at her wedding for good luck.

Something old,
something new,
something borrowed,
something blue,
and a silver sixpence in her shoe.

In this post, I will explain what this tradition actually means and also give some ideas for collecting your Something OLD, NEW, BORROWED & BLUE things for your wedding.

Something Old

This generally symbolizes the continuous chain between the the bride's family and the past. Something old helps the bride stay connected to her family. It represents continuity.

An old hair clip

Some ideas are:

A  bride can wear her mother's wedding dress or she can use any of the wedding accessory like veil, jewellery, etc. that her mother or grandmother must have used on her wedding day.

Some of the brides who do not wish to wear an old wedding gown, sew a small part of her mother's or grandmother's wedding gown inside her wedding dress.

You can take a favorite vintage family photo or a photo of your grandparent's of your parent's wedding and make a small photo charm of them or use it in your bouquet or just keep it in your purse.

In How I Met Your Mother, Robin buried a necklace when she was a teenager and used it as her something old in the future during her wedding. Young girls can do the same. They can save or hide something special like their jewellery or undergarments or anything right now which can be used for their wedding in the future.

In one of the episodes of F.R.I.E.N.D.S., Chandler uses his old condom as the Something Old when Monica and he plan to elope and get married in Vegas.

Some brides make a wedding bouquet out of all the vintage things like a brooch , or old jewelry or  flowers made out of someone's old and damaged wedding dress etc.

Sometimes some girls also use old classy signature perfume for their something old. You can also use an old coin or a postage stamp for your something old.

I don't have my mother's wedding dress with me as it was her Something Borrowed but for my Something Old I have saved a wonderful wrist watch, a necklace and a pair of earrings which my father gave me on my 18th birthday as gifts.

Something New

Something New refers to a new life that the bride is going to start with her husband. It represents good luck, success and the bride’s hopes for a blissful married life and symbolizes the new future that the couple will lead. It conveys a message stating that that the couple is creating a union that will endure forever which is till death do them part.
Generally whatever the brides mostly wear on their wedding day is something new.

The wedding gown is often chosen as the new item, along with the wedding veil and flower bouquets etc.

New shoes, New jewelry, New under-garments or lingerie, New make-up kit, garter or fragrance ... There are lots of new things that a bride will be wearing without much effort.

Something Borrowed

Something borrowed symbolizes borrowed happiness especially from another happily married bride. Generally a bride can borrow something from another person who is happily married. This person can be your siblings, grandparents, parents, friend, anyone. In absence of any such person (like if any married or happily married person is not available) bride can borrow anything from anyone.

A bride can borrow any wedding accessory or wedding gown from another bride.

Wearing a mother's jewelry is also a good part of something borrowed.

Borrowing someone's dance routine or wedding ideas or wedding vow or a reading.

Borrow a charm from a close friend or family member, and hook it onto your bouquet as you walk down the aisle.
Wrap a borrowed handkerchief that belonged to someone close to you, like a grandparent, around your bouquet as you walk down the aisle.
The most important thing in something borrowed is that the thing should be returned back to the person from whom you have borrowed it.

Something Blue

Something blue stands for purity, love, and fidelity. Virgin Mary is usually shown wearing a blue robe and therefore blue color represents something pure.
Often a blue item is the garter and in olden times the couple wore blue bands on the border of their wedding attire to denote, love, modesty and fidelity.

Another way to wear something blue is to include a blue flower in your headdress or theme your wedding flowers in blue.

The brides can also wear blue sapphire jewelry, blue eye shadow, blue nail polish or wear blue shoes.
