TAB Beauty: Back to Basics – Hydration 911 with Derma’e

If you haven’t picked up the theme of this beauty series, it’s that hydration is key. It doesn’t matter how much you exfoliate or use a miracle topical product…if your skin isn’t properly hydrated, you’ll never find the right mix of products to make a comprehensive skincare routine. So continuing on that concept, this time I’m exploring Derma’e. Now I’ve been a fan of Derma’e since when I first started this site back in 2013! They’re a vegan friendly skincare brand that offers natural products to help balance and nurture your skin whether your concerns are about hydration, discoloration, anti-aging or anything in between. Anywho, a couple weeks ago they reached out to me and offered to send me a few goodies to test out in exchange for an honest review, and I was more than happy to be a guinea pig. The team sent me two products: Hydrating Serum and their Skin, Hair & Nail Oil. Hydrating Serum: The Hydrating Serum is boosted with Hyaluronic Acid to help plump skin and visibly reduce fine lines while providing hydration that will last all day long. What I liked: You literally do feel this product “plumping” your skin within seconds of applying it. It’s not unpleasant but it is a noticeable tiny tingle. What needs improvement: Normally I love Derma’e, but this product is loaded in fragrance – and not the essential oil barely there scent. It’s a really heavy, almost cloying scent that takes me back to my high school days when I bought the Bath & Body Works Plumeria scented lotion. Within minutes of applying the serum, I had a headache. And even after washing my face to remove traces of the serum, my head still hurts. If you’re scent averse…you might want to steer clear of this product. Skin, Hair & Nail Oil: This oil is fairly straight forward and combines Argan and Jojoba oils to create a pretty heavy duty moisturizer that won’t pull any punches. Apply on hair, skin or nails to maintain or bring much needed hydration. What I like: If you have über dry skin or are a kinky curly girl like me, this oil isn’t playing games. It’s going to stand up to the thirstiest of skin or hair. However, it’s definitely heavier than the other oils I’ve reviewed so if you’re using it for your face, you should probably only use two drops versus the three that I normally recommend. The travel friendly size makes it perfect for daily use when you’re at the office or when you go on vacation. What needs improvement: Nothing – this is perfect for maintaining moisture or acting as an emergency rescue product. The Verdict: No surprise here, I am not a fan of the Hydrating Serum. I wanted to love it but that scent is too much. As one reviewer wrote on the Derma’e site, a company that promotes all natural or 100% vegan for their products should not be loading a product full of faux fragrance. However, the Skin, Hair & Nail Oil is a must have item! For more info on Derma’e or where to buy, visit www.dermae.com or follow them on Instagram @dermae
