Famous Pre Wedding Rituals in a Sindhi Wedding

Sindhi Wedding is believed to be very similar to a Hindu wedding resembling like a stem of the Hindu religion. The religion coming from the Sind, hence, the rituals, some times highlights the blend of Hindu and Sufi. In a short way, Sindhi weddings are a lot of fun with the people just needs the reason to do a Band, Baja and dance. Let’s take you through some rituals to have a better understanding of their community.

Thread Ceremony or Janya

This Ceremony is considered as very important for the guys. This is generally done during a male child’s adolescence, but if not done, these days, it is the trend to do it 2-3 days before the wedding ceremony. A sacred thread or a Janya is put around the guy with the Mehraj chanting some prayers with a proper puja held in the parent’s presence. It is even followed with a funny ritual of the guy who got the Janya done has to taken a basket and ask for some amount to everyone present in the ceremony, resembling like a beggar asking for money. It is a fun ritual after all.

Kachchi Misri or Roka

Kachchi means ‚Extemporary‚ where in here, it means informal engagement or Roka in Punjabi. Sweets, gifts and fruits are distributed between both the families followed by some token money given to the bridegroom from their in-laws as a blessing or you can say ‚Behalf booked types.

Pakki Mishri or Engagement Ceremony

Now you must be wondering why they call it Mishri? Misri resembles the sweets here and Pakki means final. So it is like the final sweet ceremony. With the prayer of Lord Ganesha, the engagement ceremony starts to bring prosperity and good luck. Thereafter, Engagement rings are exchanged between the couple. The bride’s family offers 5kgs of Mishri (Sugar crystals) to the groom’s family in a pot, where 7 married ladies make Ganesha on the pot to bring good luck for the couple. Gifts, sweets and envelopes are exchanged between the two families.

Berana/ Satsang

In every religion, the wedding rituals start worshipping the gods name they worship. In Sindhi wedding, this ceremony starts 10 days prior to the wedding with Bhajans and Satsang is held for the Lord Jhulelal (Ishta Deva for the Sindhi’s as he preached equality between Hindus and Muslims).

Banwa/ Dev Bithana

Chakki/stone grinder in which people used to grind wheat during the traditional days is installed around 5-6 days before the wedding ceremony in the house of both, the bride and the groom. This wheat grinder is used on the day of the wedding in the morning ritual.

Lada/ Dance Party

So, without lingering more, the fun part of the Sindhi wedding begins with this ceremony. It is done by inviting women friends and neighbors for the night, which is followed by music, song, dance and endless fun. As the trend is changing, so are the rituals. Now a days, even the guys are invited and made the part of this ceremony turning into a complete dance party.

Saanth or Saath Wanwas

This ceremony is either done one day before the wedding or the same day as the wedding, but in the morning time in the both bride and grooms house. An anklet is first tied on the bride’s and groom’s right leg for his protection. Then, seven married women put oil on the bride¢â‚¬â„¢s and groom¢â‚¬â„¢s head and then the two try to break the earthen pot from the right leg wearing their wedding footwear. At the end of the ceremony, his relative¢â‚¬â„¢s tear the clothes of the groom and friends, which symbolizes your past, ends here to ward off evil and start a new life. This is truly one of the fun part and unusual parts of the Sindhi wedding.

Mehendi

This ceremony is common among most of the Hindu weddings where the Heena/Mehendi is applied to the bride and the female friends and relatives followed by a party like environment. Generally, the Sangeet party follows the Mehendi.

Saagri

In this ceremony, the bride is showered with flower petals and then given gifts by her relatives. The groom is also showered with petals. It symbolizes that get prepared to get married and enter the new phase of life with fragrance and good wishes of the family.

Ghari Puja

At this ceremony, the Pooja is performed simultaneously at the groom’s and bride’s house. This Pooja is around a pot of water to be worshipped. The mother of the bride and the groom does it.

Navgrahi Puja

This is the last Pooja before the wedding is done at the groom’s house first and then the bride’s house. All the Hindu Gods and the planets of the solar system which influences our destiny are worshipped to bring good luck, prosperity and happiness for the would be couple.
