With a country as rich and as diverse in cultures like India, the customs conducted during a marriage vary in different castes, races, religions, tribes as well as geographical locations.

Check out these different customs to know more about India and its culture via ShaadiMagic.

Kumaoni Weddings

The marriage alliances carried out in state of Himachal Pradesh are very different. It is also the only Indian ethnicity that makes use of red and white flags which represent the groom’s and the bride’s side, respectively. The initial process is when the red flag follows the white during the marriage procession, until the ceremonies at the girl’s home are completed. After this, the white flag follows the red one.

Nair Weddings

The Nairs (who have their origins in Kerala) do not believe in setting up an auspicious time for the wedding. The auspicious time for them to perform the rituals is when they set out from their homes to the temple or to the bride‰Ûªs ancestral home. The wedding rituals normally take place at daytime, where the bride flaunts a huge amount of gold jewelry. Also, much different than the other traditions in India, the couple walks around the mandap thrice and not seven times.

Bihari Weddings

This type of wedding tests the skills of the bride-to-be. Once all the customs and traditions are completed at the wedding venue, the customs continue at the groom’s residence, which now is apparently going to be home of the bride too. Women in the groom’s family place earthen pots, one after the other, on the head of the bride. She carries these pots and seeks blessings of the elders. The result of the activity predicts whether or not the bride will be able to balance her future family well.

Bengali Weddings

In Bengalis, the mother of the groom is not supposed to be present at the venue during the weddings. On the bride‰Ûªs side, married women from her family wake her up early at dawn to assemble a plate of aarti (a plate decorated with auspicious things like flowers and diyas), which is also complemented with sweets. The bride to be is then supposed to visit the Ganges to invite the deity to the wedding.

Gujarati Hindu Weddings

In Gujarati weddings, the set of wedding rituals which they call aeki beki is followed. The tradition consists the use of a silver dish which comprises the rings which is filled with milk, rose petals and kesar (vermillion). The bride and the groom then dip their hands in the mixture in search for the ring. It is the best of seven series and the one, who finds the ring the maximum times, is predicted as the person who will supposedly have an upper hand in the family. Another custom also involves the mother of the bride-to-be pulling the nose of her son-in-law. The pulling is supposed to be playful in nature.

Tamilian Weddings

In Tamil Brahmins (Iyers), an age old story is recited during the ceremony, where the groom has a change of heart before entering the mandap, in the process deciding to live life as a saadhu (ascetic). It consists of the ritual in which the bride’s father has to reach out to the groom and convince him to change his decision. Things like the Bhagwad Gita, umbrella, sandals and hand fan are the used by the father to bring the groom back.
