How To Wear A Lehenga Saree in 5 Simple Steps

The Lehenga Saree has become a hot favourite amongst modern Indian brides. The reasons are simple: Apart from looking simply exquisite – a heady mix of style and elegance – the lehenga saree goes a long way in terms of convenience as well.

Firstly, it has a significantly shorter length than a conventional saree making it easier to wear – you’ll be handling lesser fabric! Another great thing is that the process of wearing a lehenga saree is in itself is quite simple: a bit of tucking here, wrapping there, and you’re done. Again, it is no surprise that the lehenga saree is one of the leading sartorial choices for brides across the country, and indeed, world.

The lehenga saree fills a niche between a standard lehenga & dupatta, and a traditional saree – bringing together the convenience of one with the charm of the other. But how exactly does one wear one? There are only five simple steps:

Step 1:

The first step is similar to wearing a saree. Wear the blouse or choli and the petticoat. Lehenga saree fabrics tend to be translucent therefore make sure you wear a stiff petticoat with an opaque fabric.

Step 2:

The next step is to wrap the saree around your waist. Begin by first taking a loose corner of the saree and tying it into a knot. Then tuck this end into your petticoat at the front (right) side of your waist – the point in line with your right leg.

Step 3:

The wrapping process is where you notice the differences between a saree and lehenga saree. Take the saree and start wrapping it around in an anti-clockwise manner. Since your objective here is to make the saree resemble a lehenga, you can make consecutive pleats in order to give it a lehenga-type look.

Do not make multiple pleats at one point since it will give it a more traditional saree look. The next steps acquaints you with the variations in wrapping the lehenga saree.

Step 4:

There are three types of wrapping styles, and it depends on the type of lehenga saree you have. If yours is one with stiffer fabric or with frills, then all you do is simply wrap it around your waist – finally leaving a loose end for the pallu.

The second variation is that you keep making wave like pleats all around your waist while tucking the saree.

The third variation is that you make a single central pleat when the saree reaches the centre of your waist after one single wrap. This tucked pleat will help accentuate the shape of the saree as well as keep the fabric firm.

Some lehenga sarees even come with pre-stitched central pleat. Continue tucking in the saree – wrapping it in an anti-clockwise direction.

Step 5:

You will eventually reach the pallu of the saree, and there are three conventional variations to drape the pallu in a lehenga saree.

Gujarati Pallu Style

In this style you pleat the pallu and drape it on your right shoulder by making it cascade from the back to the front of your shoulder. This gives the lehenga saree a Gujarati style saree resemblance, and you can extend the similarities by bringing the pallu all across your bust and pinning it to the lower left corner of your petticoat or lehenga.

Rajrani Style Variation

This is actually a variation of the Gujarati style saree. Here instead of stretching the pallu across your torso you pull it up and pin it to your blouse at the left shoulder. This gives it a V-shaped look that also resembles a dupatta drape.

Conventional Saree Style

Here you just rest the pallu on your left shoulder from front to back in typical saree fashion. This works best when you have designer work on the pallu and would like make it noticeable.

There you have it, you are now adorned in a gorgeous lehenga saree in 5 simple steps! Leave a comment and share!
