Wedding Toasts & Wedding Cakes!

A Wedding toast is a few words of wishes or blessings for the newlywed couple, after which all the guests take a sip of drink in agreement. A good wedding toast is one that strikes the right balance between humour and emotion, is short and sweet, and will be remembered as a great closing to your speech.

A wedding toast is one of the greatest gifts you can give to newlyweds. Not only does it honour the couple, but it provides wedding guests with a window into their lives. The hosts, maid of honour, best man, and the newlyweds themselves are traditionally the ones to take the mic, and they typically do so in that exact order throughout the night.

Great wedding toasts are truly memorable, bring tears to guests’ eyes, and are talked about long after the event.

Once the toast is raised, the guests raise their champagne glasses in the air to honour the couple. Traditionally champagne was used to raise the toast, champagne is often replaced by sparkling wine.

Originally, the wedding Cake was intended to be passed out to wedding guests by only the bride in order to ensure fertility. However, as weddings began to be larger events this became a task for both the bride and groom. In time, the cake cutting ceremony began. The symbolism is that the hand of the groom is placed over that of the bride’s, to show his support and as a promise to take care of her and their future. The couple was encouraged to cut from the bottom tier, as a reminder of the relationship’s longevity. As for the attendees, having cake after it has been cut by the couple is believed to bring good luck.

A traditional Wedding Cake has three tiers and each tier of a wedding cake has its own significance. Tradition has it that the bottom tier is for eating at the ceremony, the middle tier for distributing after the event, and the top tier was saved.

Choosing a wedding cake can be just as stressful as choosing a wedding dress. You need to find an amazing baker, who can create a beautiful cake in a style that perfectly reflects your wedding theme and your personality. And it needs to be delicious too!

Typically four to six months prior to the wedding is the right time to start planning the cake. If you’re having your wedding during the ‘busy season’, give yourself a little extra time to find the right bakery because wedding cakes will be in high demand and your baker could be booked out. Photos, colour swatches and any other samples of what you like to ensure your cake reflects your style must be given to the baker in order to get the perfect customisation of your wedding cake. Taste the cake and icing before you sign a contract. And if you’re going to have multiple flavours, taste them all.

If you’re having an outdoor wedding in the middle of the summer, stay away from whipped cream, meringue and buttercream – they melt. Cake creation – and delivery – takes coordination. Complex cakes may not be delivered in their final form. Refrigeration may be required. Confirming these details in advance will remove unnecessary stress on the big day.

Ideally, the right order of events in this regard is, guests must have their champagne glasses filled once the champagne is popped, the toast must be raised by near and dear ones, followed by cutting the wedding cake by the bride and groom.
