Fall Closet Essentials

Though it's sad to see summer go, we've been having a beautiful fall so far here in central Canada. It's been cool enough to layer and wear scarves, but still warm enough to not have to cover up in a bulky coat. Therefore, I've been having fun showing off my fall fashion staples. Here are some items from my closet that I can't do without during the fall months.

High quality, cotton black leggings

I basically live in my fave pair of leggings in the fall. They are comfy and so versatile. I pair them with with long tops, sweaters, tunics and knit dresses. However, not all leggings are made the same. Low-priced leggings, mostly made from nylon and polyester blends, are uncomfortable, quickly wear out and when stretched become transparent. I suggest investing in a high quality, black pair. My absolute favourite type, that I've been buying since high school, is the American Apparel Cotton Spandex Jersey Legging. They are made of a high quality cotton blend that ensures a comfortable, flattering fit, and also that the material is completely opaque. It is both thick enough for cooler days, but breathable enough for warmer days. Though $32 may feel like a splurge, they are worth the investment. I've been wearing these for 10 years and am only on my third pair.

Mesh knit sweater

I love this sweater because it's appropriate for the season, but still allows you to be flirty and show a bit of skin because of it's mesh design. I like wearing this with a fitted tank top underneath and paired with my dark leggings or a pair of dark-wash skinny jeans. Mine is by Poools Clothing, but I purchased it used from Plato's Closet and I don't believe this exact piece is available anymore. This one by Rip Curl which can be purchased at Nordstrom has a similar look, though the holes are larger.

Dark wash skinny jeans

You honestly can't go wrong with a slim-fit, dark jean in the fall. I like slim-fit jeans because they are flattering and not bulky, so they easily tuck into high boots and can be worn comfortably with a big, chunky sweater. My pair are by Garage, but purchased at Plato's closet so I'm not sure of the name of the piece or whether or not it's still available. A very similar pair is available here on Garage's website.

Over-the-knee boots

This is a fall necessity and possibly one of the most exciting things to pull out when the cooler weather hits. Over-the-knee boots just scream fall to me! I opt for a flat-soled, black pair in a suede material so that I have optimal versatility, being able to both dress them up and down and wear them with anything from skinny jeans to a skirt with tights. These also transition really well into winter. My pair are by Call It Spring, but were purchased last season and are no longer available. The Perien boot by Call It Spring is very similar in shape and detailing, though the material is different.
