Y- The Last Man-Why Not?

Guess how I spent my Labor Day long-weekend? I sat (or rather laid) down on the couch, at the cottage and read Y- The Last Man from issue #1 to the latest issue, #36. For those of you who are math wiz’s, that’s three years worth of brilliant comic book writing and art, and I took it all in, over two amazing afternoons. Why wasn’t I swimming, or boating, or partaking in one of my favorite activities, sleeping, you ask? Those are all worth while cottage activities, but I have found that comic reading is by far the most relaxing thing that I have ever done, especially when it’s the kind of relaxing that has me one the edge of the couch!

This is a Series, that when it first came out, I had no interest in. I didn’t even read the first issue and then give up on it. It was one of those series that I didn’t even try. I was reading lots at the time (just like I always am) and I didn’t give it a second thought. But, after a few months, a guy I worked with, stepped in and showed me the error of my ways. Now, I’m the kind of comic book guy that will drone on and on about what you should be reading, but at the same time, I’m so egotistical that if you tell me I should be reading a series that I’m not already reading, I'd just ignore you. In my mind, I seem to think that if I’m not already reading it, then it’s not worth my time. But I digress!

I picked up Y- The Last Man #1 this guy wouldn’t leave me alone about it, and since then I’ve been hooked. The very premise, when I first heard about it, seemed ridiculous. A comic book about the only surviving male on Earth. As far as I was concerned, that meant this book would follow the main character from lady to lady and bed-to-bed, which can sound appealing, but only for an issue or two. Where would the meat of the series come from? I just seemed to want all the answers right away.

If Y- The Last Man has taught me anything, it’s that patience is a virtue. Every issue of the series seems to end on a cliffhanger, and that’s one of the reasons I’m always back month after month. Series writer and co-creator, Brian K. Vaughn, does what no other writer in the industry has seemed to be able to do: he keeps me as excited about the next issue as I was at the beginning. Every series it seems, looses some of it’s original steam as the book goes on. This is just a reality of comics. It’s very hard to get someone as interested in issue #37, or #62 as it was to get them excited about issue #2, but Vaughn does every time without fail. So, if excitement and unpredictability are your cup of tea, the Y and Brian Vaughn, are your men!

fuck i love that book!
