Baby Talk

Ha yeah, NOT.

If you know me, you know I'll coo over your baby and I'm happy when my friends have them, but I am most definitely not cut out for the task. Regardless, babies are what it's all about for the next few minutes while I write this post. Babies and knitting.

I went to a knit night at one of the two local yarn shops I'm situated between. The shop is called Close Knit, and I've always loved the attention and service there and like her selection of yarn. I had no idea what to expect, all I knew was that sitting around in a yarn shop knitting all night without anyone expecting me to do anything else, and without my laptop nearby to distract me, might be a good idea on this rainy Portland evening. Plus, if i ran into a mistake I couldn't fix I'd actually have some help. Knitting has been for me lately a method of relearning my learning technique - a way for me to slow down and examine a process that can be generalized and applied elsewhere, as well. It's also a neurotic thing to do, really. I mean, come ON. Handknitting socks? But... why?

It's what I think I should be doing to maintain the health and functionality of my attention span, and I think it's working.

To get back to the yarn shop, it was all women in my corner tonight - all ages, all walks. One woman was very sophisticated, in her sixties - and told a beautiful story about how she'd knit baby sweaters for women who wanted to get pregnant. As each sweater proved its success, she became known as "the woman who knitted babies."

Conversation veered off into adoption, Guatemala, and eventually on to female Zapatistas and the womens' rights they're fighting for. But also, we were just... making stuff, periodically getting up from our seats to go fondle soft poufs of things. Somehow I managed to make it out of there with a bit more of my first sock completed and without spending any money.

Then I came home and discovered I'd acquired some Etsy love - after all the baby talk I'd just had, a name like LeastLikely2Breed piqued my interest so I went to check out her shop.

How great is this, I ask you? It gives the name a whole new meaning. Check out the rest of her shop for some very mommy-useful and fabulously-named natural body products.

And here's a little dainty necklace from me that's only $24.00, with jade, rare faceted amber, peridot, chrysophrase and tiny, handmade bamboo beads. It's all on really nice, delicate sterling silver cable chain with a lobster clasp closure in the front. Super cute.

You know where you can get it.
