A soft spot for legacy software

I’m a nostalgic woman, sentimental even. I have old programs that I refuse to Replace because they work well and I don’t need anything fancy to replace them. Take EditPad (now EditPad Classic). It was my first MDI text editor. I first started using it back in the late 90s when it was simple postcard ware (yes, that was a thing) and have been a loyal user ever since. Sadly most corporate AV/Security systems flag it and quarantine it to kingdom come. /sadfase

So Yeah, another old fave of mine is CSDiff. It’s a great tool for comparing folders for content variations and most text-based files. It was great for comparing Lotus, Domino, and WebSphere logs and quickly finding discrepancies. Sadly the author’s site has gone the way of the dinosaurs but I’ve had a backup of the last/final release for ages.

I was having an issue installing it on my new laptop. I’d get 2 popups; the first said, “Insufficient free disk space” (NANI??!!??) and the second said, “Cannot prepare main package. Probably incorrect TMP/TEMP variables or there is no execute permission for temporary folder.” Yeah, I checked them perms, yo. Even tried running it in all different compatibility modes, running as admin (ofc the way I install EVERYTHING), nothing worked. Then a buddy of mine in one of the sysadmin servers I’m on in Discord asked for a screenshot, so I sent him this:

“Your HDD is too big,” he said. I replied, “That’s what SHE said … just not to YOU!” (he was not amused) But yeah, sure enough, I shrink my HDD down from 4Tb to just over 1 and it installed just fine. Apparently it didn’t know what to do with all that space.

Guess I may have to look for an alternative comparison tool at some point. :(

But anyways, figured I’d post here in case anyone else ever gets this and Google happens to pass this post along as related.
