Sheets and Pillows 101

As registry experts, we’re here to answer all your burning questions about sheets and pillows (aka the unsung heroes of your bed). Check out below for bedding-related FAQs we hear from Zola couples all the time.

Q: I’m a side sleeper. What’s the best pillow for me?

A: For you: a pillow that’s high and firm, so your head is supported. For back sleepers, medium-firm is ideal, and for stomach sleepers, a soft pick is easiest on the neck.

Q: What about hypoallergenic pillows?

A: Go for down alternative, which is feather-free, plus cheaper and a tad plusher than down. Look for certifications like AAFA (Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America) for the allergy-free seal of approval.

Q: Fill power: what is it?

A: The amount of space that 1 ounce of down occupies. The higher the fill power, the plusher the feel.

Q: How much should I care about thread count?

A: Not a ton. What actually makes high quality sheeting is the cotton type (long staple is super durable), the weave (we love crisp percale and silky sateen), and the finishing technique (varies across factories, is usually top-secret),

Q: How many sheet sets do I actually need ?

A: Stock up on a cool summer sheet set in percale or linen, a cozy winter set in sateen or flannel, and a few backups for when you’re washing.

Q: Do I need to use a flat sheet?

A: Totally your call. The European way to make a bed is sans flat sheet, which means easier bed making. The American way? Flat sheet on top of fitted, which protects blankets from wear and tear.
