My Car is Steaming – Diagnose It

We all know about car windows steaming up on the inside and how it affect visibility. although, with a working blower or AC this can issue can be eradicated quickly. Nut what happens when there is steam from under the car bonnet?! A Car Bonnet Steaming could mean a number of things have gone wrong; from minor fixes to issues that require a trained mechanic. Let’s explore the reasons why you may be seeing steam coming out from under your bonnet…

Car bonnet steaming when driving

A possible cause for the steam under your bonnet when driving is a coolant leak. Have this seen to and fixed by a leak specialist to prevent any further damage 

Another issue that may be occurring is that your engine is overheated. This problem can of course be fixed at home, although if unsuccessful contact a mechanic. 

To deal with an overheating engine yourself:

  • Make sure the AC is turned off.
  • Turn the heater on as it will blow excess heat from the engine into the car.
  • Put car in neutral or park and then rev the engine.
  • Finally, make sure to pull over, wait 15 minutes or so (to cool) and then open the car’s bonnet. Be very careful when doing this as hot steam may come blasting out.

NEVER remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot. This can cause serious burns on your body.

Another possible cause for the steam under your bonnet when driving is a coolant leak. Have this seen to and fixed by a leak specialist to prevent any further damage
