Top Ten Cars Like the Nissan Juke
The Nissan Juke took the vehicle world by storm. It was the first supermini, technically the size of a small hatchback, with the body of a 4×4. It was stylish, cool and just what buyers wanted.
The supermini/small SUV is almost a raised hatchback that provides an SUV stance with low running and purchase costs compared to a normal SUV.
The Juke has been in production since 2010, with a new Model to go on sale early 2020. It retails upwards of £14,935. When released, the Juke was one of a kind. However, many other rival manufacturers have since released their own versions of the supermini on the back of its success.
If you are looking to purchase a small, stylish supermini that is not a Nissan Juke, what are your options?
- Peugeot 2008
All models of the Peugeot 2008 come with a touchscreen infotainment system, however the system on the entry level model is rather fiddly. The interior is well built, sleek and soft to touch. The inside is roomy too, comfortable for long-legged people at the front, and it’s possible for three adults to fit at the rear, but the middle seat lacks adequate leg room. The boot isn’t massive, however, it is bigger than the Nissan Juke’s.
In production from 2013, the 2008 was awarded the 2017 Auto Express Driver Power Best Small SUV. It’s available in three petrol and three diesel engines and is priced from £18,005.
- Renault Captur
After only being on the market for less than a full year, it ranked third in the European small crossover segment for 2013 with over 84,000 sales, just behind the Nissan Juke and Dacia Duster. All models of the Captur come with Renault’s R&Go system allowing you to use your smartphone as an infotainment controller. The Captur is a narrow vehicle meaning space in the rear is a bit tight, which is fine for three children, but not ideal for three adults as leg room will be tight. The boot offers an impressive 377 litres of space.
You can pick the Captur up from £15,730 and it is available in a range of petrol and diesel engines.
- Vauxhall Mokka (rebranded as Mokka X)
This car was launched in 2012 as the Mokka, but it has since been rebranded in 2016 as the Mokka X.
It has a similar interior to the Nissan Juke: plush-looking with gloss and chrome panels. Even the cheapest Mokka X has a 7.0in touchscreen infotainment system with DAB radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity.
The space within the vehicle is a little small, which once again is not comfortable for three adults but fine for children. It’s quite a popular vehicle with 80,000 orders in the first six months.
The Mokka X is available in fourteen petrol models and six diesels and is priced from £20,640.
- Ford Ecosport
The Ecosport is Ford’s version of the supermini. The basic model is well-equipped with an 8.0in touchscreen, DAB radio, USB connection, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It comes with a smart interior, but the boot isn’t as spacious as its competitors.
The Ecosport is available in various petrol and diesel engines and is priced from £17,850.
- Citroen C4 Cactus
In 2014 Citroen added their own twist to the small SUV. The C4 Cactus has distinctive paintwork protecting bumps and a somewhat unique interior. Even the lowest model comes with a 7.0in touchscreen system with all the works, apart from sat nav which is available as an upgraded feature.
The seats look quite basic, and whilst slightly roomy, there is still that problem of three adults being unable to sit comfortably in the rear. The boot space is also rather average; there’s enough space for a weekly shop but certainly not massive.
The C4 Cactus is available from £19,070 and has won several awards:

- 2015 – Geneva Motor Show ‘Production Car of the Year’

The C4 cactus is available in a variety of different engine types, both petrol and diesel.
- Suzuki Vitara
The Vitara is a compact, affordable SUV. It’s been in production since 1988, and its current version gives the other SUVs on the market a run for their money. The front seats and steering are adjustable, providing added comfort. The entry level model comes with DAB radio, USB plug in and Bluetooth. The interior overall is smart but basic which, for the price, isn’t too bad.
The Suzuki Vitara won the ‘What Car? Awards as a ‘Best Buy for Less than £15,000’ in 2016 and the ‘Small Crossover Car of the Year’ award in 2019.
- Dacia Duster
Available under £10,000, the Dacia is one of the most affordable SUVs on the market. While this vehicle is well-priced and will take you from A to B, its basic models forgo the simplest of comforts. For example, the basic model doesn’t include a radio, just the space to fit one yourself, nor does it include A/C.
The interior is also basic with hard plastic and seats that aren’t adjustable. Unlike other SUVs, the Dacia is spacious and can fit three car seats in the rear. The boot size is very generous, bigger than both the Nissan Juke and Qashqai. Despite lacking comforts regarding the interior, the Dacia performs well on the road. Indeed, it’s capable of handling tougher conditions than you are likely to face in the UK.
To give the Dacia Duster any sort of spec (we’re talking air conditioning), you would want to start at the 1.6 SCe Essential 5dr, which retails around £11,700, nearly £2,000 more than the entry price.
Unsurprisingly, the Dacia won the ‘Best Family SUV’ award at the What Car? Car of the Year awards. It’s available in three petrol engines and one diesel.
- Mazda CX-3
The interior of the Mazda CX-3 is very sleek, to the point that it’s reminiscent of the Mercedes A Class. It’s no doubt one of the smaller SUVs, but with adjustable seating it should be comfortable for long-legged drivers. The rear of the vehicle is a bit disappointing with only enough room for two adults to sit comfortably, and that’s only if the front seats have not been slid back.
It offers a similar amount of space to the Nissan Juke. However, its boot offers less space than the Duster and Captur.
Since production started in 2015, the CX-3 has won numerous awards:

- 2016 Thailand Car of the Year
- 2016 Automobile Journalists Association of Canada Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year
- 2016 Automobile Journalists Association of Canada Canadian Green Utility Vehicle of the Year
It’s available in two 2.0 litre petrol engines and a 1.8 diesel and is available from £19 395.
- Jeep Renegade
The Jeep Renegade is Jeep’s first try at a ‘small SUV’. It’s been in production since 2014 and is the smallest and cheapest of Jeep’s vehicles.
Despite the somewhat basic interior, the Renegade has a large 8.4in screen and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, or at entry-level, a 5.0in Uconnect system. The inside space is generous, being able to seat three adults. Unlike the Dacia Duster, the basic model here comes with air conditioning, Bluetooth, touchscreen information system and DAB digital radio. However, it is also nearly double the price.
The Renegade comes in four petrol and two diesel versions and is available from £19,705. It has also won numerous awards:
- 2016 Winner for Digital Experience at the Event Awards
- 2016 and 2017 4×4 Magazine’s 4×4 of the Year
- 2018 Best Small SUV in the 4×4 Class Awards
- Fiat 500x
Taking inspiration from the Jeep Renegade, the 500x is Fiat’s version of the small SUV. All models get a 7.0in touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 500x boasts a classy, well-finished interior. The 500x is narrower than other SUVs making it somewhat difficult for three adults to comfortably sit in the back. The boot space is also a little disappointing.
The Fiat 500x has been in production since 2015 and is only available with a petrol engine and is priced from £17,310.
